I always loved this song, but it utterly confuses me. I don't understand how in the first verse the character is introduced as Ralph, yet from that point on is referred to as Johnny 99. Even before he "became" Johnny 99 by being sentenced to 99 years in jail. The second verse is a continuation of the night he gets arrested, yet even before he is arrested Bruce says "Johnny's waving his gun around...". Wasn't he still Ralph at that point? |

Bono introduced this song on several different occassions during the Joshua Tree tour (1987ish) as being specifically about a friend of his back in Dublin City that overdosed on Heroin.
This, however, was not used during the Live-Aid introduction where he simply says "We are an Irish band, we come from Dublin City, Ireland. Like all cities it has its good and its bad. This is a song called Bad". |

| Bruce Springsteen – Atlantic City Lyrics

Like many of his songs, this is about desperation and trying to find the "easy way out" of a hopeless situation. The setting is not about casinos, or gambling, but about the Jersey shore which was full of pockets, like Atlantic City, that were depressed economically and full of families that were trapped. |
