im glad to see so many thoughtful reviews of this great song. the only interpretation if seen i dont agree with (as its mentioned a few times) is the front that his family is sad to be putting on. its been my experience that "trailer trash" people dont give a flying fuck what people think about them... and futhermore, give even less about hiding their personal matters. therefore there is no fucking way they would put on any type of front. i do however think that, "And I shout that you're all fakes And you should have seen the look on your face And I guess that's what it takes When comparing your bellyaches" should be interpreted as a trailer trash kid turned moderately successful (Isaac Brock, myself) trying to really get out the fact that anyone who hasn't had to deal with similar situations, can bitch all they want about their problems, for them it was just as bad as our trailer trash problems. to put it another way, both sets of situations rank a 5 on a chart, its just that there are two different charts, with different labels. |

nicely put synergistic any idea what the line "you cant see the thin air so why the hell should you care" might mean? i think it means that since you dont know all of the answers, and its not feasible (atleast in the relativily near future) to ever obtain the answers to every question asked, why should anyone care about knowing! wasted energy/time/thought. |

| Modest Mouse – The World at Large Lyrics | 21 years ago |

ok first of all. modest mouse has been around for a long time, living on a VERY shitty paycheck. somehow, float on had radio success and suddenly, BOOM. mtv music awards, the oc, even PBS apparences. WHO THE HECK cares if they want some LONG LONG AWAITED FAME... if not just simply money. its not like they dont deserve it. they are simply put, one of the few bands to ever exist that will actually _say_ something to the world. and The World At Large, is infact their best song lyrically ive heard. (with the exception of about 4 total songs, thats all of them). i dont think this song is at all about being on tour in a band. i think its more to do with Isaac Brock's search for the meaning of life. ice age... heat wave... can't complain no matter the situation, i think he feels that he doesn't truely care, or feels that he can't care about anything at all. if the world is at large why should i remain? obviously, Brock feels that when you look at the bigger picture, the whole world (universe) at large, his existance as a few atoms stuck together really don't add up to much. the rest of the song about how he is constantly searching for someone who feels the same way as him, or someplace that feels right to him. as many philosophers have noted throughout the years, the only thing that makes the emptyness seem filled is love. did i want love? did i need to know? why does it always feel like im caught in an undertow? i think Brock is trying to ask the question, do we (as humans) need a meaning of life to live, or can we simply just go with the flow of things. |
