| Haha I'm mcw517. Yeah i tried typing some of these lyrics in google but the only thing I got was this page..so any added info would be great. Say Goodbye has tons of alternate lyrics so i guess it's possible the almanac just missed it or something. | |

| Dave Matthews Band – Light Lift Me Up Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I too love this song. I wish it would actually get played and/or remembered. It seems like the meaning is pretty simple...it's about being tired of life and the monotony, and the light is a reference to God. Light lift me up...lord help me, lift me from "the bottom to the top." | |
| Dave Matthews Band – Butterfly Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
It is about his daughters, i have a version where he says so (I think it's farm aid 04). I think it's a very sweet song, it sounds like he is explaining to his daughters what life can be like. Sometimes it can hit you hard and suddenly (like a broken bone) and it can hurt, but you need to dry your tears and live your life (fly away). |

| Dispatch – Bang Bang Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
ok, here's my interpretation and sorry if' someones's already said this because i didn't read through all the responses. the way I see it, this is about a man who wakes up one morning and realizes he's very confused about his purpose in life and the meaning of life in general. "Had a big hunch that the world was a big lie When I got up all the blood to my head I got so dizzy fell back into my bed" -those lyrics reflect this, once he realizes all he's been living for is not necessarily true and/or important, he doesn't know what to do. The confusion makes him dizzy, thus he "gets back in bed.' He goes "looking for the tide" which I think is really looking for his life/way of living. He's looking for answers. Then he meets the old man, who shows him all you need in life is simple things "He pointed to a conch shell and then to the lime And said this is all I really need to get by" He realizes he's been sleeping his life away. What he thought really mattered, didn't. Finally, he takes a step back and realaxes. Enjoys life. But, just when he thinks he's found 'the answer' another person comes along to say that sometimes life is better spent sleeping. You miss the harshness. And he's lookin' all over again. Love this song, i think it's jsut abuot the uncertaintly of life and how you can't do anything about it. You just live. |

| Dave Matthews Band – Hunger for the Great Light Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| ahh.. Hunger for the Great Light. This was the first song to really grab me from the new and exciting Stand Up. They lyrics aren't really phenomenal, but this song reminds me a little of Rapunzel, in the sense that it is so sexual. It's very catchy though, really makes you wanna "stand up" (haha, not funny i know) Anyway, I had my doubts about this cd but I'm starting to warm up to it and I have this song to thank. | |
| Suzanne Vega – Marlene On The Wall Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Suzanne Vega needs to be more appreciated. There are no comments on her songs! This is a great song, and although I'm not really sure what it's about, I'm pretty sure it has to do with sex. Especially in the thrid verse when she says, "I walk to your house in the afternoon By the butcher shot with the sawdust strewn "Don't give away the goods too soon" Is what she might have told me And I tried so hard to resist When you held me in your handsome fist And reminded me of the night we kissed And of why I should be leaving " She's speaking of lust. Both lovers know it's wrong but they can't help themselves. As she leaves, "Marlene watches from the wall." "Marlene" (a painting or portrait most likely) has seen all the other lovers that have been there, hence her mocking smile. The narrator reminded that this is really nothing more than just another ordinary relationship. Finally she walks away from that relationship, "I think it's called my destiny/ that I am changing." not sure if that's correct, but that is how I see it. |

oh man...what a truly great song. One of my favorite dmb songs. It's great how dave can make such uplifting songs without making them seem corny or trite. This song, and others, makes your soul feel almost..open. It's this feeling that you get when you know that yes, things are not always perfect, but there are those moments that everything is just right. You want to open your arms and embrace the world. I love that feeling. And I love this song. Thank you. haha... the best part is when he goes, "Maybe I'll go in the middle of the night ..." ahh i love it! |

| Nick Drake – Parasite Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This song seems to be about the lonliness in this world. He doesn't belong anywhere, and there's no happiness in this "town" he sings of, which is really just the world in general. "When I'm lifting the mask from a local clown And feeling down like him " even the clown which is supposed to be happy and light-hearted is unhappy. everyone's stuck in that rut that they can't get out of... |

| Elliott Smith – No Name #5 Lyrics | 21 years ago |

the song that sums up the story of my life (when I'm upset, that is). This is a great song, probobly about change. Change in a relationship, change with friends. He keeps remembering the past but he knows it can never be that way again. "and you don't get upset about it /no not anymore" again conveys helplessness and the apathetic feelings you get when something beyond your control is happening--when you're standing still and the rest of the world is moving. |

| Suzanne Vega – The Queen And The Soldier Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| such a beautiful song. I first heard it when I was five years old, and ever since then it has struck a chord with me. | |
| Suzanne Vega – Undertow Lyrics | 21 years ago |

I'm suprised there havn't been more people commenting on this song. It's a great song, about exposing our true selves. Like the verse, "Once I thought only tears could make us free Salt wearing down to the bone Like sand against the stone Against the shoreline" suggests, only by pain and sorrow can we break out and see ourselves and others for what they truly are. She then comes to realize that once you've scraped away everything superficial, life has a different meaning. Your soul is finally free. Great song. |
