I believe this was a look into the bands rocky realationship. This was a direct hint that there were problems... Kim probably wasn't too happy at this point in the band and Black probably was telling us... hey we are having problems so don't be suprised when we break up a year or two from now. It is basically a huge middle east reference. The whole one sip of this salty wine... turning water into wine the dead sea is the salty-ist waters in the world hence salty wine. Gas obviously a large part of the middle eastern culture. The Gaza Strip... i don't know I always think about car bombers in Isreal/Palestine. |

Isla de Encanta is simply Black's ode to Puerto Rico where he spent sometime overtime over there during college. No doubt did that have a huge influence on him. It is no secret that Black Francis has a love for the beach life "I am the beach goer but there is no beach".To go from U-Mass (not that great of surfing up there) to talking about his island of enchantment where there is no suffering. Well all pixies songs are great... to me this is my favorite. It is hard to single out one song though. I think it is the raw emotion behind it and being more about the emotion you the listener get out of it. Black Francis voice breakes a number of times in this heart renching song. To me that says it is just more about sex. I think these songs mean different things to different people... what it sounds like to me is there is the person who he loves... but they have never been together... despite there numerous lovers... this is revealed it the lyrics "whores in my head whores at mydoor whores in my bed but hey where have you been." However they are always there for eachother... even if it isn't the way he wants them to be. The "UH"s in the song to me are very sexual (orgasmas) so this song is about sex but it is an odd take on longing for someone... inspite of other lover being around them and you. This song to me is about longing pure and simple. |
