"The infrastructure will collapse." It scared me when I heard it. I agree with what someone said earlier; the inevitable decay of a capitolist system. Yes, it seems to clearly pertain to a doomed relationship... Hopeless love... A slow, quiet escape... But in the music, I hear the sounds of all doomed structures - social, psychological, universal... I hear lyrics in the guitar, in the drum tap, in the ambience... Facing doom, honestly and frankly... The music bleeds of one's forced acceptance, of being bludgeoned by reality... while the singer wails, "Denial..." ...This song is a portal. That's all. |

"Mouth full of sweets Rottin' your teeth Lift up the rug and sweep it underneath" Self indulgence. Undesirable consequence. Corrective action taken. Yep, it's about abortion. A cold, disregarded one at that, I believe. |

| Well, I'm the first to post in regards to Shortbus. This song is almost like the theme of the film. And it is so charged and beautiful. This movie, and this song, individually do so much. Together... they're healing the universe. | |

I got a sense of allowing herself to be controlled in a few lines. You know, feelings of passivity, degradation... "you were knocking me down with the palm of your eye"... And also mentioning how shy she is... it really seems to give this narrator a lot of personality. Whatever this relationship was, it seems she allowed it to get the best of her. |

You know, we could hold comparisions between this song and "The Matrix". I'm seeing many similarities that are, well, so clear that it would be quite unnecessary to actually point them out... But, with this song, I kinda get the feeling that's it's saying that it's okay to balance your sleep and awake. That one can still dream, but must also be realistic. And that it's not entirely just saying "wake up". I mean... "So here's the sun, that's alright. So here's the moon, that's alright." I mean, we do need some sleep in order to survive... |

| These are the best posts I've ever read on this site. So many different interpretations of the song. Neither one or the other necessarily the correct one; the lyrics mean what you feel they mean. And I agree with the grey fool -- this song is beauty in its purest form. Now that I have analyzed the lyrics, its earned its place as one of the greatest pieces of writing I've ever read. I mean... Jeez. How can a song like this be so underappreciated?? | |

I dunno. After seeing the video (which I see as absolutely amazing. Mostly. It gets a little silly here and there with "will you cut off my hand?", but the message is phenomenal), I see how the song could have the same meaning as well. How when one grows older, their innocence is robbed from them. "I'm a poor little baby, and I believed them all". That would be the naive child. "So while you're growing old under the gun..." Growing up and having your eyes opened to the evil of the world. Now the song, as opposed to the video, implies that this factor of "growing up" was induced by a specific person. With a Y chromosome. He stole her innocence and dumped her away afterwards, cold and bitter. "I wish I could buy back the woman you stole". Granted, this is just my interpretation. Amazing song, though. The music... it really does something to me. It really takes me another place. The guitar, the drums, her words... God, I love this band. |
