of Montreal – Labyrinthian Pomp Lyrics 16 years ago
I feel like this is a song about several things at once- like a conversation with someone you know. He's announcing the change in direction the album takes, but he's also showing confidence in the face of someone who hurt him [and, of course, is glad to have Nina back].

I was wondering if anyone could remember which Queen song is quoted right before "There's two gods for every one…" ? I know I know it, I just can't remember for the life of me even which album it's from.

Toploader – Dancing In The Moonlight Lyrics 17 years ago
First, just to clarify, Elvis Costello never recorded this song. It was originally by King Harvest. And, as others have noted, Toploader kinda butchered the song. [If you've heard their version first/only and you like it, that's fine, but if you've heard the original, you probably understnad why I don't care for their cover.]

It's really a good lyric though, no matter how much the singing and instrumentation is messed with. It's so much about the freeness of spring/summer and having a moment in your life where everything is right. It really reminds me of Mrs. Dalloway, where she's talking about beeing a young women and this one moment that she thought was the begingin of being happy but later realised *was* happyness.

Rufus Wainwright – Gay Messiah Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree with some of the oppinions posted here and feel that they would be better suited to a discussion about Rufus Wainwright in general than about this song. That said…

I see this song as being a lighter thing born of heavyness; it's no protest song but it's aware of the inequity of the world. I interperted the title phrase to indicate a messiah for the gay community, not Jesus. [Jesus is accepted as the Christian messiah and, due to lots of history I won't bore you with, is the most recognized one in the U.S., but is not the be-all end-all of savior figures.] I see it as being about this young man who is a beautiful and loving person that embodies the lithe boldness of the gay culture hay-days and his sesual purity of purpose touches everyone he meets with that same sort of old-school glitter. That this symbolic manchild would bring forth all that is good about the sort of makeshift family of friends that so many homosexual people find themselves in and show those who were on the outside, judging, what it was they were really saying. And that, while Rufus/the narrator sees the need for this person, he isn't going to claim that sort of responsibilty for himself, just that he can feel the coming change.

The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, I can see that no-one else has yet had this reading, but what I get from this song isn't so much about the narrator being inlove with the girl.
Rather, I'm hearing a slightly older [but still young] narrator telling this prodigy-esque young woman who is spouting nihlistic veiws that while she's right that the world is a pretty drafty place, she should try and find her youthful joy while she can. "You're brilliant, but lay off the exitentialism or you'll end up like me." So it's not even that the narrotor is presenting himself as a love interest, just that Sheila should loosen up a bit.

Madonna – Into The Groove Lyrics 17 years ago
While werumm is right that 'groove' can me considered slang for a vagina [esp. the labia majora] I've never felt this was one of Madge's 'come fuck me' songs.
There's something very sensual about just dancing with someone, reguardless of whether it leads to sex or not, and I think this song just touches on that about pefectly. If you've ever been to a club and found yourself dancing with someone without words, you know what i'm talking about. It's a very interesting sort of organic.
And that the song is dance-able as well as about dancing is even better :D

The Rocky Horror Picture Show – The Sword Of Damocles Lyrics 17 years ago
Just as an FYI, the sword of Damocles was a 'real' sword from the story of a coutier who got the opportunity to trade places with his king. While he at frist enjoyed the banquet and being waited upon, he looked up and saw that there was a sword hanging by a sing horsehair over his head [since he was sitting in the king's seat]. Reminded of the responsibility that comes with the power of aking he dicided he'd rather go back to being a cortier.
So, yeah, feeling like you've got some impending doom when there's a big old sharp sword just waiting to decapitate you isn't so out there [say the trannies].

Rasputina – Crosswalk Lyrics 17 years ago
This song gives me the impressions of the narrator having fallen into an exitential haze- no necessarily drunk, but that she's not interacted with anyone for so long in her daily life that she spends most of her time thinking and re-thinking things that are long gone and done. Like when you can't get over someone and you're so used it you veiw the situation as an outsider 'why does anyone like anyone anyway?' type thing.
I can't put how I feel about this song into words very well, but there it is.

t.A.T.u. – Clowns (Can You See Me Now?) Lyrics 18 years ago
I feel this song fits into the 'outcast babydykes' theme from the first album, so I'm going to presuppose that as the base interpertation.
In this case, both girls are upset by the way they've been treated, but they have not yet grown to stand up to them completely. Living just as they have until this song, they've been hurt, and now the narrator is feeling frustration as the other girl starts to retreat into herself out of shame and fear of the societal pressures. The narrator is reminding the other girl how they know that what everyone else is saying is wrong and doesn't matter and to not allow herself to become one of them just because they're everywhere. Still, the other girl is shoegazing and upset because the other people keep reminding her of all her little failings until they seem massive.
The narrator implies that she let them have control over her before, but she had towithstand their wrath or loose herself to them, so she's trying to tell the other girl from experience that listening to them doesn't help anything.

The Police – Don't Stand So Close To Me Lyrics 18 years ago
It's not about anything that's happened but the tension of desire and waht can't be. Girls at the school where he works fancy him for being youing and handsome and such, so the rumours fly fast when he takes on a protegé [teacher's pet] as they work out of class hours, but although the rumours are unfounded, he finds himself attracted because while she's so young, she's obviously intelligent and interesting. He can;'t show any concern for her because of social politics, and he wishes she'd stop innocently being near him for fear it will make the other girls hurt her and him loose his job.

Just a quick note on Lolita- while it is set in America, Vladamir Nabokov was indeed Russian. The allusion is a bit of a spoiler, but to put is quickly, the narrator loved Lolita from afar for a great deal of their time together, even after consumation as initiated on her part.

I adore this song, for less-than-lovely reasons.

3 Doors Down – So I Need You Lyrics 19 years ago
I never saw it as a paternal song, just because of the band surrounding the lyric. It actually reminds me of a time I think every life has, where you're in that desperate love stage and you are just so focused on not losing this person. Even if there's some stupid stuff that goes down from time to time, you're devoted to them, 'but are you devoted to me too?

Jack Off Jill – Cinnamon Spider Lyrics 19 years ago
I feel like it's more of 'you' having to come to terms with the singer. Like, she's aware that she can be a bitch and hurt people who hurt her, but that's the way the world functions and you have to deal on your terms because she's found a place where she can reconcile her causing pain with the amount of pain she's endured. It's not that she thinks it's right, because she still hates the weakness that comes from being hurt, but it's the way things are…
