Strike Anywhere – Instinct Lyrics 17 years ago
During a recent concert, Thomas said that this song was for and about a neighbor of his - a little girl with an abusive/alcoholic father. Songs like this reflect the changing focus of the band, lyrically - a shift away from macro social issues and towards more personal themes. I think that this provides the band with some healthy balance, but I'd like to see a return to their poetic and scathing social commentary.

Less Than Jake – Look What Happened Lyrics 18 years ago
The title to this song was originally "Look What Happened to Urishima Taro", referencing an old Japanese folk tale about a man who left his life behind to live under the sea with a tortoise princess, and when he returned, 300 years had passed and everyone he knew was long dead. He missed his old life so much, he opened a magic box given to him by the princess, which immediately aged him 300 years.
So compare that story to these lyrics. - they compliment each other perfectly. Wanting to leave so badly... and then coming back, and everything is different, and you kinda miss the way it was.

Strike Anywhere – Allies Lyrics 18 years ago
Just saw Strike Anywhere at JMU this past weekend (9/29). Thomas talked about this song - he said (and I'm trying to quote him as closely as possible) it was for "all our friends, brothers, sisters, everyone who is gay or living in the closet, living in such a hostile environment." He went on to discuss the fear and hated propagated by religious and political leaders (hence the line "the ministers fill up the skies / preying on our fears and lies") and that one thing that can't be taken away from you is your love. I'm straight, but it almost all brought me to tears. The poetic, powerful and passionate music and lyrics that this band gives to us all is empowering and inspirational, and I'm so thankful that there are bands like Strike Anywhere that use the power of music to communicate such intelligent, thoughtful and positive messages of hope, strength, love and empowerment.

Fall Out Boy – A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More "Touch Me" Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm gonna disagree with the analysis of the video. Vampires are usually metaphors for staying young forever, which is the total opposite of aging/growing up. I doubt the video has anything to do with the lyrics. Rather, it was probably just a fun idea that the band members wanted to play out on screen. It seemed reminiscent to me of the late 80's monster hunter movies i.e. The Lost Boys. It's a really fun video, and I bet it was a blast to make for the band.
