It sounds to me like the song is about a father who doesn't give his daughter any attention. He didn't know he was ignoring her until he read her diary. "Is she someone I don't know at all?" sounds like he is realizing he doesn't really know anything about her and she's already 8. |

I always thought the first lines were "Lift the bad weight off your molars, And let the thoughts fall off your tongue " So I figured he was saying it's bad to keep things in. You should open your mouth and speak your mind (thoughts fall off your tongue) |
