This is the first Smiths song I ever heard. It always reminds me of the girl I was seeing who played it for me. I kind of always thought it was about Jesus. At one point when he was on the cross, there was a spear that was thrust into his side. Hence the boy with the thorn in his side. And of course we all know that he had a crown of thorns too, so I thought it might of been some wordplay going on. The rest of the song seems to fit to that theory too. Jesus's love was met with cynycism throughout his ministry |

I'm so sick of closed minded people saying that every piece of art or entertainment that has a subject matter of or includes in some fashion race and ethnics is racist. I just want to punch those people. You are not helping anything or anybody, assholes. You are pushing all of impressionable society back to ignorance. And furthermore art or entertainment that addresses common stereotypes of certain races is not racist either. It's motherfuckin statistics. Its facts. It doesn't single anyone out. Why don't you get over your own fear and actually listen to what is being said. |

I think among other things that this song could mean discrimination of some sort is maybe the subject for if not the whole song then at least for the first few stanzas. It doesn't nessesarily have to be discrimination against blacks although it could be. It could also be discrimination based on certain social status's. That's my spin. This was the one song that stood out the most to me when i listened to Zeppelin III for the first time. Recently listening to it again, the lyrics spoke to me in the way i just said. I can just see Plant as a young boy, carefree, friends with a little black kid. And then being told by certain authorities that it is not ok for him to hang out with him. This song is a beautiful way to capture that confusion that i would imagine a young child might feel having to go through something like that |
