i honestly just feel like modest mouse has just used more resources and created a different sound with this new stuff. i definitely like it, but it's definitely different. what i feel like a lot of people just can't understand is that looking at all of mouse's stuff in the same context just won't work. if you listen to good news listening for the organic, you're-right-there-with-him feel that moon gives you, then you're wasting your time. their old stuff is beautiful because it's human, that's why they originally appealed to me; for example, the fret buzz on a lot of the acoustic tracks on moon. it doesn't sound processed and rick rubin would probably frown on the man who dropped stuff like that into the final mix; i don't know if stuff like that was intentional or simply because they were so fucked up while recording/just weren't aware of stuff like that. when i heard johnny marr was going to be active in writing and recording this cd, i flipped out, because i'm a huge smiths fan as well. listening to songs like this one, i can totally hear the marr in it, the punchy guitar tones, the layering, everything (although i bet working with isaac brock is very different from working with morrissey). it's a new sound, and to me, it's not necessariliy better or worse. things sound much more organized, but the way marr rips up the frets with those little riffs he makes up...it sounds cool to me. it is NOT OLD MODEST MOUSE. it's something that needs to be listened to and appreciated in a completely different context. but there is substance to it. i don't think the band has lost any artistic credibility amongst all of this media attention. i've always felt like brock has just done his thing, and if a lot of people happen to like it, great; if they don't, whatever. i don't think anyone on this website is in the position to question whether the band has "sold out" or lost any artistic merit. i know that popular music today is extremely far from what it used to be, artistically and substantially speaking, but i think it's unfair to write off this music as hollow simply because they're getting attention. i mean, if people want to not appreciate music, fine, but in the end they just ruin it for themselves and miss out on something that is obviously still moving people and not just filling a slot on a fm radio playlist |

you can hear johnny marr in this song so much, the way it's structured, the guitar tones/layers, etc. the lyrics seem pretty accurate to me, good job |

any ideas on the song title? i mean the natural first guess is well..obvious, but there's no mention of it in the lyrics, so i don't know maybe they're saying nugget is the answer to world peace, this song does kind of have a old-school reggae tempo/feel |

i think this song is about being depressed, and then looking at the world around you and finding everything that is wrong with it...the alienation and loneliness that come with living in the ultra-sanitized, vacuum-sealed environment of the modern world... a lot of matt's songs are about drugs, and i feel like this one approaches them on the level of "i'm miserable in this bleak world, and i do drugs to make it more interesting and least somewhat bareable" i've definitely met a lot of people who use drugs for reasons like that i think this song was written in a whirlwind of emotion |

this song, to me, describes a person who is dealing with the pain of looking at a relationship in retrospect...and/or coping with the pain of a breakup through drugs. i feel like this is more of a retrospective only because of the ghost/graveyard/regret stanza; i don't think these sort of thoughts come in the relationship process until after it's ended, and you look back on it, and realize how different life was then. |
