someone said about the girl applying chapstick to look pretty. you're thinking of lip stick. so i dont get it. does it have to do with healing lips maybe, in other words a metaphor for like trying to "heal herself of their kisses" or something deep like that? holler at me. |

by the way. you know how in donnie darko, drew barrymore says that cellar door is the most beautiful combination of words? i dont know why, but i feel the same way about "and your hair..smells of smoke..."..it makes me get real emo and i dont know why |

what i get from this song isnt so much the literal taking advantage of a girl, more of just leading her on. "lie for fun and fake the way i hold you"..i feel terrible because i realize ive done that to girls. that ive had no real interest in them but pretended i did for whatever reason. "If you let me have my way I swear I'll tear you apart"..if she lets him control the relationship he will eventually end it and it will crush her. |

i really like dr. pandas explanation of "how i would push...", if that's how the song was written that's one of the most beautiful metaphors i've heard. when i first heard this song, i learned it on guitar and got all ready to sing for my schools talent show. then i realized i sucked at singing. but anyway, i didnt know the album was about the holocaust until i came on this site. nmh is amazing..why arent they more popular? havent met a kid my age yet that listens to them. |

yeah brilliantly done with the stealing of the oasis tune. just a really great simple song that gets to the heart of getting over a break-up, and looking forward to what the future holds "maybe then tomorrow will be monday and whatever's in my eye should go away" |

however, smith meant it to mean drugs anyway. that was just me throwing that out there. that scene in royal tenenbaums is so well done, and this song's mood is perfect for it even if the words don't quite fit. |

gonna have to disagree on that. the "whenever i want" doesnt fit in with a thing as permanent as suicide. its probably more about whatever sedates you, whatever gets you by to another day. going along the suicide idea, to some people that might mean self-mutilation (cutting) |

wait. on second thought, possibly a donnie darko reference. id imagine they watch many movies on tour, so if you're writing a song essentially about touring it would only make sense to incorporate lessons you learn while on tour (Even if from movies) into your songs. |

lol no offense but i dont get any donnie darko from it. maybe though its a cult classic and if a band like brand new is going to make any references to movies id imagine it would be a movie like donnie darko. anyway...
i dont really think this song should be considered a slap in the face to girl fans. certainly theres truth to the line that this is what he's out to do, but i bet he just felt like admitting that as an emo singer that's where his biggest fanbase lies. it's like nsync or something not admitting that they appeal to girls. when i heard that line i immediately loved it because jesse's not pretending to be something he's not. plus the rhyme itself just flows so well with the song..i wish my writing turned out half as catchy as that. |

ill assume that no one's suggested this theory, i dont feel like reading everything.
i was talking about this w my bro and and he suggested a really interesting theory, that this song is about capitalism and media manipulation. that maybe, if it is for a fact drugs drive-in is talking about, is drug-imagery used to show how the media and advertising dupes people.okay, well 2 things to explain first:
1. "capital" is basically money, but can also mean any kind of asset, like a house, an investment/investor, property, a business... anything that can generate money is capital.
2. you have to think about capitalism now a little differently. the definition I gave you is the pure definition. But think of it as being skewed by 150-200 years of industry, the addition of mass communication and advertising
so w/ that in mind, you get into things about being not necessarily lied to , but definitely fooled by advertising (a practice some advertisers deem necessary for healthy competition, but generally regarded as wrong)
you get people putting a lot of faith into material goods. think about fight club.."you think no matter what happens to me, I've got this couch thing handled"
are we just infants
that are ripe for the training
the opposition
can't feel the tenticle reach
suction cup the numb arms
of the elderly
this part for example.. infants ripe for the training - are we naive enough to believe the messages we're recieving from advertising? tenticles are common imagery for corporation's/gov't's long reaching arms, hands in everything. the elderly are the most often fooled by advertising messages / As-Seen-On-TV products, etc.
carny guarding gates of Heaven is the most telling example. |

i remember first time i heard this song was when I got the album back in sixth grade. It pissed me off I was like "over 8 minutes??! back to my name is jonas." but one day i was listening through the album and when rivers whispers "oxygen carbon dioxide" i realized how much i liked it. i dont know, a wierd story of how i associate with this song. great slow jam though. |

i slap this song in my profile it seems everytime i feel played by someone. its such a good song of the most basic feelings of frustration, like a temper tantrum of just feeling like shouting at an ex "well if you felt differently why'd you lead me on like that?" baaah, a classic song. jew is one of the most lyrically advanced bands of our time. |
