Anastaja definitely has it right. What is brilliant about this song is it goes beyond the obvios cliche. Looking back on the nostalgic parts of this relationship, he understands that it had to end for both involved but there will always be that regret or second thought that even despite that the lover had to go from his life (for whatever stupid or valid reason) that it's irrevelant. He would still like to be in those moments when they were blissful lovers enraptured in each other in the moment without thoughts of past or future. Brilliant. |

I'm an Ani fanatic and have so much of her music. When it's all said and done, I have to say this is my favorite song. It's beauty is in it's simpicity. The opening rythmic guitar riff is in perfect union with the simple yet deeply sincere lyrical meaning. Everyone knows that feeling when they are so infatuated with someone that they can't approach them never mind profess their feelings. In Ani's case, the only way she can communicate these uncommunicable feelings is through a song, a lyric, her musical/poetic gift. What I love is the reference she possesses for this gift of hers. It is simple yet profoundly beautiful like a boquet. It's all in the thought and the meaning behind that thought as long as it is sincere. Ani will be remembered as one of the greatest of our generation. Hopefully it is not before she has left this planet. |

I'm going to do something a never do and I'm going to take this song literally. Maybe I'm going out on a cliff but I think that this song is bout Ani somewehere on tour and does through a Fire door backstage after a show and see's her lover kissing someone else. (...four lips that were kssing, none of which were hers). It may be metaphorical but everyone knows that feeling when a lover cheats on them and even though they're strong enough to move on, the imprint that, that lover left on them is still there and remains moving forward. That's part of life and vulnerability with allowing yourself to fully experiend a an in depth relationship. Everyone has focused on Ani's political/social bent lyrics orver the years and seem to ignore her more romantic leanings. I love her vulnerable sensitive side. She has so many angles to her personality and they are definitely not right angles if you know what I mean. This song definitely shows her strength but also her softer more vulnerable side to a lover. |

| Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics

I've thought about this song so much and now realize why there are so many posts and so much confusion regarding exactly what he was trying to say. If you know Elliott's music, then you know the re-occuring themes are often the frustrations and struggls with both unrealized love relationships and addictions. Elliott was both a genius and a true poet, so the meaning is definitely not meant to be literal, it is about a common feeling experienced both with unrequited love and also with that feeling that comes from an addiction whether it be a relationship or alchahol. I'm sure Elliott wrote this when he was drunk and was fighting those demons that come accepting a lover in the form of an addiction. Only someone who was this creative could get away with such a concept and paint both realizations so clearly and beautifully. |
