Re the Hillary Rodham line, I had always thought it was used because at the time the song was penned (i.e. late 2007/early 2008), Hillary was the clear frontrunner for President. She was therefore "on top".
So, when he's saying "And when im at the bottom she Hilary Rodham" he means that he's on the bottom and she's on top. It makes sense if you consider the previous line where he was on top and she "drops it like it's hot" i.e. she's on the bottom. |

An impressive song from a (usually) less than impressive band. I think the dark pumping on the bass line is very effective – and so, while a typical song about labels and angst, the music elevates it into something a bit better. The sound is slightly different too, the ahha’s are very ‘The Killers’, the verses, very ‘Linkin Park’ and there is a later My Chemical Romance sound in it. This song could be a big hit. |

According to band member Tom Delonge, "The story behind that is Mark (band member Mark Hoppus) read a letter someone sent him as an email, that a kid wrote before he committed suicide to his parents. We kind of got together and wrote this sad, slow song. It came out sadder than we ever thought it would, which is good too. Any song that moves you is good. Some people listen to it and go 'Wow, that's a real bum-out of a song.' But it's one of those things, a story of a kid not being happy in his life, crossed with us being really lonely on tour. Well, as this song was written for the film 'White Squall' it is obvious the song is talking about the town of Valparaíso in Chile. Cape Horn is considered the Mount Everest of sailing... the ultimate challenge and this is where the Albatross (the ship from White Squall) met its end. Also, in the Lighthouse overlooking Cape Horn there is a giant silhouette of an Albatross, coincidence? Beautiful song. |
