Ok, I know about the whole "Kurt Cobain, fish=pisces, february=amethyst stuff" and also all the "billy corgan jazz" BUT...humor me, let's pretend that none of that is associated with HOLE/Courtney love. What do you think of this: Personally, what this song says to me is that she was loved and hurt. She allowed herself to be vulnerable, and was used: “When they get what they want, they never want it again.” But she is torn because she knew this would happen: “I told you from the start just how this would end.” and admits that she too committed the same crime: “When I get what I want, I never want it again.” She feels guilt because of this: * “Hey, I’m the one with no soul. One above and one below.” She did however, advocate a warning: “You should learn when to go, you should learn how to say no.” She is angry because the person who perused her did not heed this warning. So with two people wounded by these events, she informs that the pain they feel may last only a short time, while her pain is much deeper: * *“Might last a day, yeah. Well mine is forever.” Finally, she is forced out of her safe world and expresses her passionate anger to those who have wronged her: “Go on, take everything, take everything I want you to.” She says “take everything” because she no longer cares. She still has her world of violet, something that can never be taken from her. * She claims to have no soul. No soul above (which may represent heaven) and no soul below (which may represent hell). This could mean that the world of violet she created is her own heaven and hell (a comforting place where she belongs). * This could also be interpreted in another way. The “above “ may represent her mind, and the “below” may represent her physical sexuality. When she says she has no soul, she may believe this because she is feeling guilty for having had bad judgment in the past, or perhaps because she has realized the wrong of her own contradictory nature. * * When she says “Might last a day, yeah. Well mine is forever” she may also be referring to the violet world. If this world is not her safe haven, it may represent hell. Perhaps she is saying that she created this hell and is now trapped in it forever. “Your hell might last a day, but mine is forever”. But she still seems pleased by this world, as she insists she have it: “I want it again, but more violet, more violet.” This could mean that maybe she enjoys the state she is in. Maybe she requires this world to function and she accepts it because she is shamed by her own faults and feels she should repent. |
