| Band Aid – Do They Know It's Christmas Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Again I need to reiterate that I have nothing against Christmas or Christians practicing Christmas or, heck, even wishing that EVERYONE could enjoy Christmas if they want to. But wealthy people gloating over their superiority and implyimg that its those inferiors who can't seem to enjoy life like we do... well, that just sets me off. Look up those two other venues. I promise you that the African Children's Chior makes some REALLY GOOD music. I've see them live and they are adorable. And the Various Artists - Halloween CD should be voted Single of the Year (even though Malcolm McLaren is on it)!! | |

Where the hell do some people get off saying that "your opinion is irrelevant"? Fuck you, man. Just cos this crap sold a billion copies that somehow makes it the greatest song ever? Wow, and it throws a bone to the dogs. I don't find it offensive due to religion - I find it offensive because it's essentially saying, "Let them eat cake." And by the way, here are TWO other ways you can contribute to the same cause but get more satisfaction out of NOT being a prick. Go to http://www.africanchildrenschoir.com/ and put in some cash every month. They'll send you a nice plushie and a couple of GOOD Cds!! Made by REAL Africans who aren't livin it up in their mansions saying, "I wonder what the poor kids are doing today." DTKIC literally says this when it sings: "Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you (Here's to them) underneath that burning sun Do they know it's Christmastime at all?” What kind of crap is that? and SECOND you could buy the "Do they Know It's Halloween?" single with all proceeds going to Unicef. http://www.vice-recordings.com/halloween/index.php Now that is a kickass charuty single. (And yes, it is a satire) |

| "Writing in the glow of the TV static" he sings earlier in the album. | |
| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I think Elliott's father, Gary, is a doctor (retired now). Correct me on that if I'm wrong. Also, Son of Sam WAS a "couple killer." He shot at couples making out in alleys or cars with .44 caliber. Usually the men were just badly wounded and one man DID die. So he didn't just kill women, theough his anger was probably more fixed towanrds them. Elliott might be saying that his failed relationships make him a couple killer and that he didn't feel particularly great about it. He felt guilty, and that makes him no better than Son of Sam, because he knew he harbored a messed up love and hate for those women in his love. Since his dad was a doctor whom he repsected and loved, his mom was probably the nurse. Although the images are pretty sterile, aren't they? BTW, Elliott's relationship with his mom was strained. He got along much better with his dad, probably blaming his mom for letting him be abused by his step-dad. "You tears are cheap" he once wrote of her. I can understand why he said this song was written without Berkowitz in mind, creativity can be very sub-conscious. | |

Thanks for the info on Bruno S. people. I think it all makes a little more sense to me now. The phrase "color bars" might alsp refer to the standby signal you see on TV when a station signs off the air for the night. It makes sense when you want to shut off from the mainstream, or the mainstream wants to shuts you off. And of this song has some brilliant cinematic visuals. Also, "the sound" might be the loud beeeeeping you hear when the station goes off the air. I picture Elliott just sitting on the couch alone late at night in front of the TV (which is how he said in an interview he often wrote songs with his guitar - brilliant!) and he just became one with the moment. That's what I love about Elliott, he could turn this simple moment into a reflection of his rugged individualism! |

| Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| sad, sad song. beautiful. Uplifting, really. This is Elliott at his best and my favorite album. He peaked here I think, although I love ALL his work - this to me is his masterpiece | |
| Elliott Smith – Everything Reminds Me of Her Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| You people are all so full of crap. None of you have never had a drug addiction, I'm wagering. "Everybody cares, everybody understands" And if you have, I'll bet none of you have ever written a song, at least not a good one. It's about a girl. THE END. Period. I cannot BELIEVE this world is so full of idiots! Deconstructing every line to fit you moromic purposes! Elliott was as honest a writer as you can get. If he wanted to write about drugs, he would and he did MANY TIMES! The last two lines in the comment preceding mine are the worst drivel I've ever read. Somebody ban this guy! He probably is a @#$%$ tea leaf reader, not a bloody critic or scholar! Stop thinking EVERYTHING is about drugs. No wonder Elliott killed himself, having to deal with people who pigeonholed him all the time! | |
| Elliott Smith – Roman Candle Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| this song makes me cry when I hear it. There is so much pain there and anger, it is so palpable and understandable if you've ever been the victim of child abuse or know someone who has suffered it or even if there is a dark chapter of your life surrounded around any individual. This song is pure Elliott at his most visceral. It's just so raw, it leaves my skin burned with its emotion. I had XO and Figure 8 before this album, and at first listen I was unable to continue. It was just TOO raw. Beautiful. Perfect. It made me uncomfortable. It was in the movie Good Will Hunting, which is just such an Elliott type movie. It's about brilliance flourishing through pain (specifically child abuse) and self-destructive behavior. The scene where Matt Damon says he always chose the wrench, even though it would hurt more, in a way to say "F-- you" to his abusers -- that is what this song is like. I wonder if the director had any idea of Elliott's history when he chose to incorporate it. It's more distressing and painful when you come to think that THIS is how Elliott chose to open his solo career and introduce himself to the world, something I think haunted him to the bitter end. And, yes, "hallucinating" is very much what flashbacks are like. | |
| Elliott Smith – L.A. Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| God, who transcribed these lyrics? They're included in the liner notes! Pay attention! "The Gentleman's in the lane, spinning his hat on a cane." And don't type it phoenetically. "L.A." not "lllllaaaaa" Also, it's "Morning never come" not "one of a kind" also there's usually a "but" before "last night I was about to throw it all away" (except in the last verse) | |
