I feel this song is basically pretty straight-forward. The second person point of view is pretty cool. I think it is talking about making a rash decision you are so sure is right at the time, and then all the doubts and confusion which come later. The people around you are jealous you can give everything up (including them) and not look back, while they do not have the self-confidence nor independence to do the same. |

I think the character is dying to do something completely crazy and unexpected, such as shocking the Queen by pulling his pants down in front of her, and exposing his honest self to the entire world. The character is tired of the false emotions around him, and the way the people around him marvel over small things like household objects. He is so used to these fake, unnatural emotions that if he ever felt a TRUE emotion, he doesn't know whether he could even handle it anymore. |

I think the character is depressed about herself as a person (not as a worker or lover) so she tries to find her place and meaning in life by reading these classic, philosophical books which actually don't have any more insight into life than she has. Rather, a real person (the tattooed boy from Birkenhead) is the only one to show her the world the way it truly is. |

I agree about the back of the car bit. I think it is referring to something sexual, not because the character is in love, but he just wants people to know he has someone. I think the part about "you are your mother's only son and you're a desparate one" is perhaps saying the character's "lover" is also in the relationship for the wrong reasons; that is, he is so desparate to carry on his family lineage he is willing to share his backseat with just about anyone. |
