A Perfect Circle – The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with most in the sense that the song is about an addiction. But after listening to it a few times, it seemed to be a morphine addiction specifically.

I guess I'll try to break it down line by line.

" Say hello to the rug's topography
It holds quite a lot of interest with your face down on it"

-Being on the floor after taking or coming off of morphine

"Say hello to the shrinking in your head
You can't see it but you know its there so don't neglect it"

-Prolonged exposure to Morphine can cause the neurons in one's brain, which release dopamine, to shrink. Therefore not releasing as much dopamine into the brain.

"I'm taking her home with me all dressed in white
She's got everything I need pharmacy keys"

- The nurse, who is also his drug dealer

"She's falling hard for me I can see it in her eyes
She acts just like a nurse with all the other guys "

He starts to think that he is the only one that she does this for. May or may not be true.

"Say hello to all the apples on the ground
They were once in your eyes but you sneezed them out while sleeping"

-This one took me awhile to get. When someone says, "You are the apple of my eye" is suggests that the one saying it is very fond of the recipient. So to lose the "apple of your eye" would be to lose someone or somthing you hold dear.

As for the sneezing out while sleeping, a common side effect of morphine withdrawl is sever sneezing. (God how annoying that would be)

"Say hello to everything you've left behind
It's even more a part of your life now that you can't touch it"

-Pretty self explainitory. Kinda like the last line. Losing something dear.

Tool – Stinkfist Lyrics 20 years ago
I have found that it does have a lot to do literally with being desensitized to overstimulus (media, tv, sex, power, money, love) It is sort of the consumer within that makes us want things so bad- even if we don't really want it, we must have it. I think that this is poking at capitalism as a whole. Our consumation/indulgence in everything will leave you feeling really numb and disconnected with other people/yourself/nature/emotions. He uses the metaphor of fisting as a parallel to the extreme lack of moderation. Instead of readin the lyrics with sexual actions in mind, one could easily substitute the feeling of emptiness and (SADLY) accepting a consumer numbness.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Blissed and Gone Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think the song can be about any love he once had. Corgan said that the only song he had ever written about love was on Machina, "Stand Inside Your Love"

According to Corgan, the band's inevitable end was apparent around Adore- Jimmy was gone, tension was building between him and D'arcy.

Keep in mind that for Machina, he had to practically begged D'arcy to do one last album. She didn't even go on tour for the album.

I'm sure the writting was on the wall that after the fourth album it wasn't going to last.

Vanessa Carlton – White Houses Lyrics 20 years ago
Griffinrb I think has it right on, I'd change one part though- "Spinning bottles" probably refers to drinking/getting drunk. Most likely a celebration of independence, being out on one's own.

She moved out with some friends, had a party. Sounds like what I did.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Blissed and Gone Lyrics 21 years ago
This song I believe has to do with the ending of the Smashing Pumpkins.
"The sun has left, the rays are gone" -We did well, but now it's ending
"All the kids have left their tears and gone home" -All the people at the last shows were upset (tears) but now they are going about life again (gone home)
"You were all so kind when I was near" -Talking about how nice and personable the fans are/were
"If you're still feeling down then maybe you need me around" -Being upset and putting on your fav Pumpkins cd
"Just one more song to slay this earth and I can't explain myself just what it's worth" -Even at the last show, it would be hard to not keep playing, at some point it must end and it will be very sad for him
"I had no hand in watching it all fall apart" -Referencing how his bandmates wanted it to end even though the band was all he wanted.

Perhaps the song brings in so many details of what happened during the downfall of the band and this is kind of his way of coping with the reality that all he ever wanted was this band and no matter what he did, it is falling apart arund him. poor billy... :(
