Adam Lambert – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
Indeed he's playing it just like Gary Jules did (with strings added), when Jules covered this classic Tears For Fears song for Donnie Darko.

Beck – John The Revelator Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually Johnson recorded this in 1930, Son House didn't record it until much later. But this version which uses Son House's lyrics is about the Fall of Man, The Crucifixion, and The Resurrection.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's important to remember the context in which Ben wrote this song. That being almost 30 reflecting on life, those close to him and ultimately death.
I think what makes this song so appealing is that even though it's about the afterlife & carrying on when someone close to you dies, it's not religious. To me it's about trying to reconcile this issue when you're not religious or atheist. Ultimately we all ask these questions but the agnostics and such don't have an immediate answer.

[Verse 1]
"Love of mine"
-I think this actually is about anyone really close, as someone earlier said and not romantic love.

"Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark"
-That even when that person is gone, part of Ben will still be with their spirit or memory. Love is eternal.

"No blinding light
Or tunnels to gates of white"
Just our hands clasped so tight"
-Rejecting common beliefs and instead choosing be concerned with the moment.

"Waiting for the hint of a spark"
-In search of an answer for what's next for both of them, in the afterlife and here on earth.

[Chorus]
"If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
And illuminate the "No"s
On their vacancy signs"
-Just saying that 'even if heaven and hell are real say they're not letting anyone else in' that...

"If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark"
-...I stay with you, even through death, as best as I can.

[Verse 2]
-This verse needs to be taken as a whole really. It's not very symbolic but extremely important. It relates his experience with and view of religions that lead him to reject them. The reasons that led him to be where he is spiritually.

[Verse 3]
"You and me
Have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes
Are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about
Because we'll hold each other soon"
-It's been some ride, but now it has to end. But still he'll be with them.

"In the blackest of rooms"
-The hole in the floor, the unknown. For the person about to die the afterlife, for him coming to grips with this loss and carrying on.

Snow Patrol – Chocolate Lyrics 17 years ago
The name line is tricky but you're right it was weak attempt. It could be more about accepting all of who he is. Or maybe the name of the girl he had the affair with, someone he'd never actually have a relationship with (though more of a stretch).

The straw is THE lie about the affair, I stated this, it's him denying the affair. When you talk where do words come form? Your mouth.

He claims he knew it was a bad idea and would have ramifications, but he didn't. He didn't think it out or even plan to cheat. Anyways no one thinks they'll be the ones to get caught.

Some other things I'd like to state/restate:
The song's continuity seems to be
1-The epiphany
2-Replaying the big fight in his head
3-The apology
4-Talking about the relationship/the promise.

"This could be the very minute
I'm aware i'm alive
All these places feel like home"
-An epiphany. He finally has a solid idea about the future. And that he's fucked up royally, but he knows what to do.

"With a name I'd never chosen
I can make my first steps
As a child of 25"
-Sort of taking control of his life. Owning up to all that he is, his successes and failures. Also just realizing that 25 is actually still pretty young. I've heard many older people refer to people still in their late 20's early 30's as "still a kid to me".

"You're the only thing that I love
Scares me more every day"
-She's his world, and he's only 25. He's terrified that how young he is and how real things are.

"What have I done? It's too late for that
What have I become? Truth is nothing yet
A simple mistake starts the hardest time
I promise I'll do anything you ask, this time."
This verse sounds like him answering her questions about him, the affair, and their future.
Too late to focus on the affair. They have to give their relationship another chance.
He hasn't taken much seriously and screwed up. It'll be hard moving on but he'll do anything for that last chance.

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the most appropiate Biblical passage (like sfpasssm said) is from Isaiah chapter 21 possibly versses 6-8 and in my oppinion deffinately verse 9. Just because he read the bible every morning doesn't mean he was useing the Christian Bible (and even if it was the only one he had not nessicarialy the New Testament).
Personally I think the part of meaning comes from the last line "Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl." in that the riders (joker and thief) are coming on the winds of change.

Has anyone noticed how this is musically similar to "Desolation Row" by Bob Dylan. The lyrics are pretty self explanitory though.

Bob Dylan – My Back Pages Lyrics 20 years ago
The line up on the 30th anniversary concert was: Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison. Each sung one verse in the order givern. Both Clapton had solos Claptons between the third and fourth verse and Young before one final chorus after Harrison's verse.

And Chris nailed it. The young teen who is supposed to fight the man, knows everything, is enlightened. And behalf of every one us who has "grown up" (still only 18) I appologize we were very stupid but we hope we're better now.Now let me go chase that crazy penguin.

Simon and Garfunkel – A Hazy Shade of Winter Lyrics 20 years ago
I just want to say that I don't think it's a jump to another person's "inner monologue" rather looking back at his life when he was young, which kind of works with the next lines "Seasons change with the scenery,Weaving time in a tapestry".

Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
Trent Reznor is a lyrical genious, even though I don't like that much stuff by NIN his talent should still be recognized. I think that Cash's version is a man looking back on his life as he's dying. It moves from depression to anger and ultimately regret. Essentialy it asks "Was any of it worth anything?" the difference in age between Cash and Reznor is the only thing that really changes the meaning.

Warren Zevon – Frank And Jesse James Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this is a grate example of Zevon's excellent story telling abilities. His using a well known outlaw as the protagonist is the perfect example of an anti-hero (whether he intended it or not). It's also interesting that this (the first song on his self titled debut) and Desperados Under The Eaves (the last track on the same album) have identical intros (same key but different instruments) just really is amazing but I'm not sure if that meant anything or not.

Led Zeppelin – Nobody's Fault but Mine Lyrics 20 years ago
Ok first things first. roadrunner99, right on. Next the amount of material stolen by these classic rock bands (albeit some did give the artist the credit) is unvbelievible (ok so spelling has never been my strong spot). Anyway I would have to say Blind Willie Johnson's lyrics are about asking god to save him from the devil. Where as Zep's would be about salvation from addiction and following pt's statement I'll say a heroin addiction. Now one last thing everyone here who hasn't already find all the artist who Zep stole from and listen to them AND BUY NOT ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD THERE STUFF IF YOU LIKE IT!!

thank you and good night.

John Lennon – Stand By Me (Ben E. King cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the lyrics speak for themselves but I still feel like I need to say something, It's asking someone to stand by you no matter what. And I think that Lennon's version is so different (and great) from the original by Ben E King (also great) that they just can't be compared and both are neccisary.

Simon and Garfunkel – Bleecker Street Lyrics 20 years ago
Note: In the gospels it mentions for 30 peices of silver Judas turned Jesus over to the athorities.
Shadow or shade was used in medieval times for a soul or spirit.
Canaan is an ancient country in what is now Israel/Palestine including the West Bank, western Jordan, southern and coastal Syria and Lebanon continuing up until the border of modern Turkey; and has several biblical meanings.
From the back of the original 33 liner notes by Art Garfunkel:

quote "I confess that Bleecker Street (finished in October 1963), was too much for me at first. The song is highly intellectual, the symbolism extremely challenging. The opening line in which the fog comes like a "shroud" over the city introduces the theme of "creative sterility." But it is the second verse which I find particularly significant:
Voices leaking from a sad cafe,
Smiling faces try to undersand;
I saw a shadow touch a shadow's hand
On Bleecker street.

The first line is a purely poetic image. The second line touches poignantly on the human conditions of our time. To me, it shows the same perceptive psychological characterization as Sparrow - the "golden wheat" ("I would if I could but I cannot, I know"). The third line marks the first appearance of a theme that is to occupy great attention in later work- "lack of communication."
The author says that the poets have "sold out" ("the poet writes his crooked rhyme"). The line "Thirt dollars pays your rent" reminds one of Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Christ for thirty pieces of silver. Admittedly, the song is difficult to understand, but worth the effort." end quote

Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay Lyrics 20 years ago
This is not about his dog. It's him sweet talking to his wife, the third preson is just a way to add to what he's telling her. It's one of his gratest love songs and the best on this album (Nashville Skyling) followed closely by Girl from the North Country, his duet with Johnny Cash.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree that this is McLean's veiw on the evolution of music from the death of rock 'n' roll up untill 1970 or 1971. And it shows his disdain for the music that was popullar and his wanting to return to the R&B and rock 'n' roll of the 1950's. But I think a line by line analyisis is imposible because of the vast number of potential meanings for each line and the song should be looked at as a whole rather than it's individual parts.

Blue Öyster Cult – Don't Fear The Reaper Lyrics 20 years ago
To me this song always had two meanings.
1 don't fear death it's natural
2 you will be reunited with everyone you loved who died before you did

I think that's all there is the rest is just a poetic way of making those two points.

NOT EVERYTHING IS DEEP, somethime the meaning is told by who ever wrote the song or it's just blantenly obvious you inittaly overlook it. oh and intrresting poing stagg64 very funny.

The Presidents of the United States of America – Video Killed the Radio Star (The Buggles cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually the version of the song I have the lyrics are slightly different:

I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through.
Oh-a oh
They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the supernova scene.
Oh-a oh
I met your children
Oh-a oh
What did you tell them?
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone to far
Whoa Oh-a-a-a oh
And now we meet in an abandoned studio.
To hear the playback and it seems so long ago.
AS you remember the jingles used to go.
Oh-a oh
You were the first one.
Oh-a oh
You were the last one.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
It was in my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone to far
Oh-a-aho oh,
Oh-a-aho oh
Alright

guitar solo

Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
It was in my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone to far.
Pictures came and broke your heart, so put all the blame on VCR.
You are radio star.
You are radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed that radio star yes it did.

And i defenitly think it's about one media form giving way to another (this song has been remade into a flash video called "Internet killed the video star). And I always thought that "If I was young it didn't stop you coming through" refered to the availability of the radio and how it was hard for a kid to get a tv. And the going to far works with both going to far in the car (cough back seat cough) and time in general can't rewind oh and "in my mind" might mean you can't rewind back to innocence of youth though i'm tired and probally reading to much into it.

Snow Patrol – Chocolate Lyrics 20 years ago
I'd like to argue against the drug concept.

Alright so first the title of the song: well someone already posted why the writter named it Chocolate so let's leave it at that.

"This could be the very minute
I'm aware i'm alive"
The perfect second where you figure out your life and know for sure what you will do with your life. The ultimate moment of clarity and you also realize that you let the perfect girl walk away.

"All these places feel like home"
Home is comfort and familarity and when that crystal clear moment happens everything feels wornderful and you just feel you know where you want to be and it just feels like home.

"With a name i'd never chosen"
I don't like my name? maybe? someone else gets to name you.

"I can make my first steps"
First time in your life your 100% confident that you can make it on your own.

"As a child of 25"
You are 25 years old.

"This is the straw, final straw in the
Roof of my mouth as I lie to you"
The straw that broke the camel's back, a lie to his girlfriend.

"Just because i'm sorry doesn't mean
I didn't enjoy it at the time."
He's sorry but dosen't completely regret doing it.

"You're the only thing that I love"
The one for him.
"Scares me more every day"
Ture love is scary?
"On my knees I think clearer"
Either begging or a religious reference (great the proverbial "cat") people realize things while praying (maybe more of pandora's box than the cat).
"Goodness knows I saw it coming"
Saying "I knew it from the start"
"Or at least I'll claim I did
But in truth I'm lost for words"
But not really actually it came out of left feild, and he's still alittle confused.

"What have I done? It's too late for that"
It's too late to figure out why you have to fix it.
"What have I become? Truth is nothing yet"
Everything that was realized in the moment of clarity can't happen untill he fixes it, in essence a snap back to reality.
"A simple mistake starts the hardest time
I promise I'll do anything you ask, this time."
He messed up the relationship and now it's going to be tough winning her back but he'll do anythig at all if she gives him one last chance.

So I hope in using all the lines (except the child of 25 one) to back up the relationship theory versus
pick-and-choose interpritations done by those who think its about drugs (exception mondegreen's idea which is pushing the lines past reason).

I just agree that the song is about Syd, and would like to point out to Jesus Freak that "a walk on part in the war, For a lead role in a cage" would mean he chose to stay with the band and be in everyone's eye.

I would also like to say that "Brain Damage" and DSOTM in general was not about Syd but insanity and loneiness.

Led Zeppelin – Kashmir Lyrics 21 years ago
Ok I think we shoud sort some things out here.

1 Kashmir was inspired by Plant & Pages travels in Morocco.

2 Morocco is in Northwest Africa on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

3 The lyrics talk about a lost Shangrala, which is in Kashmir.

4 I think that the lyrics might also have something to do with enlightenment which no one else has seemed to think about.

this song isn't as much about good v. evil as everybody thinks. it's really just about a guy trying to get this girl to go with him. and satan's daughter i think just means some girl or something that would tempt him. and all the "can i make your garden grow" type lines i think are just suttle refrences to sex. the music is your master it's just saying follow the beat and do what feels right (at least at the time ;)).

Led Zeppelin – Ramble On Lyrics 21 years ago
First though the LOTR ideas are cool, not everything is about LOTR actually almost nothing really is.

The song (to me) means:

1 A guy when he was down & out (in the darkest depths of mordor) he meets the perfect girl (Verse 5)

2 But he let her slip away (the line about gollum) (Verse 5)

3 So now he's "goin round the world" to "find my girl" (Chorus)

4 And after staying with someone who helped him for a while he knows he's gotta get back to looking "I gotta ramble on" and find that girl again.
(Verses 1 2 &3 and Chorus)

5 The LOTR reffrences and that "mine's a story that can't be told" is just to add some air of mysticism and "coolness" to him (Verse 6)
