My understanding is that it's a love song inspired by the miners' strike in Britain in 1984, and about men having to sacrifice their families' home comforts to fight a point of principle - ultimately because of the love they had for their families , they were fighting to protect their futures. The 'hands of steel and heart of stone' lyric is a direct reference to Ian McGregor, who was a fomer Chairman of British Steel then brought to the National Coal Board to tackle the National Union of Mineworkers, who were perceived to be militants. The strike tore families and communities apart and probably led to lots of relationships breaking up, which is the theme of the song. |

This is one of the greatest love songs ever written - sadly destroyed by the David Gray bedwetter's mix. Awesome with Marc Almond's wandering vocal and delivered with real emotion and power. Obviously about the break up of a relationship and the bitterness that ensues after he 'tried to make it work'. Phenomenal - the original anyway. |

| David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes Lyrics

Great song. Bowie says it's actually about the moon landings ten years on - that there was no point in putting a man up there in the first place, it was just a bigger place for humanity to jump from. In that sense, Major Tom being a 'junkie' takes on a different meaning, of all the space programmes being a kind of bottomless pit with no end purpose. But clearly, when you write you're also influenced by what's going on in your own life - and Bowie had just come out of his worst phase of drug addiction. That probably influenced some of the lyrics. The guy's a legend, untouchable. |
