I have heard that "Rikki" refers to either eRIC Clapton...or RICk Derringer....and a drug addiction... Clapton's drug addiction is famous...around that time he was certainly not in top health... Plus there is an allusion to Clapton with "slow hand row"... Having said that...Rick Derringer played lots of session stuff with Steeley Dan...and I'm pretty sure he was an addict of some sort...so this seems plausible as well... Having said all of that...it seems like a love song.... |

I believe Paul responded to this song in his own gentle way with Silly Love Songs....and I've taken the liberty to post my contention at the Silly Love Songs page... It is sad that Lennon felt so much antipathy towards McCartney...perhaps he was more brave and honest as an artist....but I think Paul comes by his easy going nature just as naturally....and took a higher road....IMHO... |

This is Paul's response to John Lennon....who had frequently savaged Paul in various songs... In particular the song How Do You Sleep by Lennon is quite a scathing indictment of McCartney.....That he was too trite to be a true artist....and sold out to the pedestrian fan... Paul replies..."Some people want to fill the world with Silly Love songs...what's wrong with that?".... |
