He is gay. The song never says the "dear" is a romantic dear or a good friend dear.
Besides, people often write songs with the pronouns all wrong just because it makes for a better story. Not everything has to be straight from a person's own life (no pun intended). |

| The Magnetic Fields – How To Say Goodbye Lyrics

It's one of those conflicted feelings. That sinking sensation in your gut when you realize that what you want more than anything is for your beloved to be happy. Except what makes her happy tears a hole in your heart you could drive a truck thru. |

| Ani DiFranco – Both Hands Lyrics

I adore this.
The idea of both hands is the desperation, the longing for contact. I suppose the best comparison would be to a scene in Leonard Cohen's novel, Beautiful Losers, where his hero is making love to his wife, and it is so clear that he longs to connect to her, to become, literally one with her, rather than be two people intersecting for the moment. He wants to consume her whole, like a fire. And this is the kind of love making Ani is trying to get across, that kind of desperate desire of a doomed relationship. |

| Placebo – Taste In Men Lyrics

I'm not seeing the love triangle angle. I'm seeing the speaker with a woman (or man, but whatever) who can't make up her mind about him, so she just 'comes back a while,' then leaves and comes back again in near constant loop. She's always "changing her taste in men." |

| Rufus Wainwright – Gay Messiah Lyrics

I would argue that today Chrsitians are being more opressed that gays.
What're you smoking? You know it's rude not to share.
Genuine persecution of Christians is rare, and anywhere it happens, there is far worse persecution for homosexuals. (See the two boys executed in Iran after being caught in bed together for a perfect example)
In the US and other first world nations, Christians aren't oppressed. You're imprisoned, executed, fired from your jobs, or denied ANY equal opportunity under the law. All you do is whine when someone says something you don't agree with, or admits outloud they think your belief is stupid. (Like Sam Harris did) That is not at all oppression or even discrimination. Off the cross, someone needs the wood. |

| Shakira – Hips Don't Lie Lyrics

Just because you don't like this song doesn't make you smarter than people who do. It just means they like women and you don't. Seriously, I defy you to find a straight guy or lesbian with a healthy sex drive who doesn't love this. It's not about intelligence, it's about Shakira's smoldering hottness.
I agree there's a lot of stupid music, but the real crap comes from musicians who percieve themselves to be more intelligent than they are and offer a "social perspective" that shows no real insight. (See "Beautiful Soul") |

Umn... Courtney Love used to have sex with Stipe herself. He's her kid's godfather. Oddly, the kid's godmother is also bisexual.
Oh, and he is bisexual, so the stuff about Kurt and him may or may not be true. |

| Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat Lyrics

The title raincoat was probably the article of clothing accidentally left over when she said he hadn't visited. It has to be, otherise it wouldn't be this central.
It reminds me of his books. Beautiful Losers is much like this, but more so, Death of a Lady's Man. DoaLM has many poems that are so connected that they intertwine. |

So the great affair is over but whoever would have guessed
it would leave us all so vacant and so deeply unimpressed
It's like our visit to the moon or to that other star
I guess you go for nothing if you really want to go that far.
Some of the most amazing lines ever. |

I agree with JP, it's not physical but emotional distance. I love this song, because the lovers aren't these star crossed figures, or brand new, just starting out. They're established and amazingly real. Brava, |

Micheal Stipe's bisexual, not gay, BTW.
It's about falling in love with a male for the first time, feeling the confusion and isolation and the obcession that comes from being so isolated. You're so confined in what you say, but you have to talk to someone. So you speak, but guardedly, playing pronoun games and never using his name. You're "choosing your confessions." The spotlight, ever present as a music star, is following you when you can't stand to be followed. |

Well, they *are* gay, so I'm kinda siding with spiChel. Besides, if the person they were writing about was a man, then being locked up with a bunch of them wouldn't be so bad. I mean, one woman in a place filled with lots of able bodied and willing men... sounds good for the straight. |

I think it's about having a *ahem* thing with a friend and how it changes your whole relationship to her.
"because I start to forget but she will always remember" means even though you're trying to pretend it never happened doesn't mean it'll just go away. |
