I don't think that he takes his son back to his hometown, I think that he has a family there. "Last night me and Kate we laid in bed talking about getting out...." They are thinking about leaving the town, times are changing and there are few jobs left. The town isn't the same as it used to be, but I think he's trying to say that even though the town has really gone down hill he's still proud to have growin up there and he wants his son to be too.

One of my favorite Bruce songs, makes me sad everytime. "Then I heard that long whistle whine and I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried." To me that is the most powerful line in the song. |

In response to Lititrock, "Bush and Kerry wanted to use this song...." It would make sense for Kerry to use the song because his campaign was anti-war and the song is anti-war. Also Kerry went to Vietnam and came back with many of the same feelings that this song is written about. |
