this song is rather appropriate for me.. i was born and lived in Belfast (northern ireland) for a while, so that makes me british. i have lived in the south for 13 years and i feel irish (the opposite of morrisey i guess) and i hate the whole situation between the two countries. its not something thats going to go away and i think that what morrisey is saying is that he wishes that everyone could accept what has happened in the past, but move on and deal with today, and todays issues, instead of being ruled by ancient history |

The song slows down at the end because of bassist Mike Mills. They noticed he was in pain, but everyone followed him and finished the track. After they were done, Mills was taken to the hospital and it was discovered he had appendicitis. They never got back to redoing the song. |

weird...i was at a mission thing a while ago and they used this song. for a sketch involving an orange. was better than it sounds!!! it was a girl holding the orange (representing her heart) and it kept getting battered- her "friends" drop it her boyfriend chucks it away, she sticks a knife in it (self harm) and a drug dealer injects into it. then another person comes up (god) takes away the orange and gives her a brand new one. that to me is what this song is about- renewal. this person has gone through a lot and has a lot of questions. at the end tho there is hope as "these open doors" represent new chances |

I think this song takes a very interesting angle on faith- it looks at something very few people know about- the thoughts of a dying person. Most people who have a faith of some form know, or at least think they know what will happen to them when they die- this person doesnt, and at the end of a life lived as an atheist is realising they may have made a mistake. when he says "and I know you're in this room

Just thought id explain Opus 40 for anyone who doesnt know- in 1939 a man named Harvey Fite began to make sculptures in a 6 acre quarry in Saugerties, New York. Although originally intended to stand alone as separate works of art he soon realised their beauty as one whole piece and began thinking of his sculptures as one. Sadly he died in 1976, in a tragic accident on site, and so Opus 40 was never completed. Great song by the way... |

I have heard interviews were Bono says that he dedicated this song to Ali, his wife. I think this is clear in the first verse-
