Iron & Wine – White Tooth Man Lyrics 16 years ago
There's only a couple of verses in this song that jump out at me with an apparent meaning: "'I love this town, but it ain't the same,' The ski mask ripped as he was putting it on". Put differently, I think of it as someone saying, "The crime around here sucks", as they're preparing to rob a bank. The line makes me laugh when I think about it. I think it means that whoever the "White Tooth Man" is, he's a hypocrite, and complains about the decrepit state of society while making it worse himself. I'm having trouble applying this theme to the rest of the verses, however.

Matthew Good – A Single Explosion Lyrics 17 years ago
From reading Matt's blog, there are a couple of possibilities I can think of. Matt had an experience where he overdosed on some medication, leading to a hospital stay of a few days, which influenced many of the songs on the album (not to mention the title).

My recollection of this blog post is hazy, but I also remember a story of a dream Matt had, where he dreamt of being very sick and kept in a tower, where he was visited by an angel that comforted him. If anyone has seen this story and wants to add to or correct my recollection, please do.

Rosie Thomas – Much Farther to Go Lyrics 17 years ago
"We saluted the Statue of Liberty"

This is a great song. I especially like Sufjan's banjo on this one. He has a knack for fitting that banjo unobtrusively into songs in both main and supporting roles.

My guess is that this song is about when Rosie moved to New York to further her music career, and all of the emotions that came along with that.

Natalie Merchant – Tell Yourself Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm convinced that this song is about the same child that she sings about in "Eat For Two", and "How You've Grown". Perhaps a niece? If you think about the dates and ages mentioned, you'll see that she's 13 when this song is written, probably around 2002, was perhaps born in 1989 when "Blind Man's Zoo" came out, and was a child of 3 or so when "How You've Grown" was written. Thanks for getting this song up, MixedTape. I was unsuccessful in 2 attempts of it.

Matthew Good – Weapon Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song speaks of Canada's complicity with the United States. "Here by my side" refers to the US. When Canada "gives out", and "gives in", they themselves become a weapon of the US.
