Electric President – Wearing Influences On Our Sleeve-less T-Shirts Lyrics 10 years ago
Somehow this makes me think of politics.

To begin with, a failed candidate sold out by his party, but in losing can craft the narrative as he fails:

When you fought
You sunk like a stone
But that's not why you came here
And that's not while we'll go

You were sold
And you were bought
And you were blamed
When they forgot

But you can choose
Just how you fall
You can choose how to lose it all

Next, I think the singer is recounting debates -- he likes how the subject debated him and respected him for choosing when to hold back:

But it's nothing I miss
But I liked how you hit me
And I liked how you quit

After which, the subject left politics and denounced the party -- didn't just switch teams but left the game. After that, the singer describes politics by being honest when he tells lies, and ends up describing the singer's downfall/betrayal by explaining he was raised to spend whatever it takes (ie selling out the subject in the first place).

I may be projecting, but I feel like the singer's lover sold out to corporate america and failed / was scape-goated for a failure. In other words, the singers lover sold out to support them, but the fact that things went bad in business was not the actual reason things went to shit between them. The real reason was that the lover lost his passion and became bitter.

You were sold
And you were bought
And you were blamed
When they forgot

But you can choose
Just how you fall
You can choose how to lose it all

Electric President – Eat Shit and Die Lyrics 11 years ago
@[Chillax7:1317] Funny, but I got the opposite impression. I saw the singer as a petty juvenile delinquent who was reminiscing about a partner-in-crime that he had a brief but memorable fling with before even learning their name. Maybe the singer needs to straighten up a little and the listener needs to loosen up a little more.

I associate "Eat shit and Die" with a happy kind of rebellious message, the way you might grin and tell your best friend to go fuck themself.

I see it about stages of development in facing society.

In the earlier, slower parts of the song, the singer is in awe of the scope and complexity of society like a little kid just beginning to comprehend the world and the mysteries of technology and society.

Slowly it builds to a dread as the singer sees the cracks and the problems with it, but is told not to worry about it or do anything different because they'll just replace it all with the same old stuff that's always existed.

Finally it breaks into the singers dreams of creating something completely new as he casts off the remnants of what's always been.

Plushgun – Kick Me Out Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe the song is directed towards the singer's Catholic lover, who is filled with guilt and self-loathing over their relationship (I always picture a same-sex relationship when I hear it, but the guilt could stem from pre-marital sex, or one of them could be married.)

The singer's lover is locked in a cycle of hating himself during the day, but breaking down and returning to the singer in the evening. Rather than break up with his lover or telling him to get over his religious hang-ups, the singer just embraces them and tells him to go to confession first thing in the morning so he can feel okay about himself during the day, after and until he inevitably returns to the singer. Basically, the singer is telling his lover to go through the motions of rejecting him so they can keep seeing each other without the singer's lover tearing himself up.

I also see the "meander from this cave" as a socrates reference -- basically saying that eventually his lover will see the world as it really is and that his hang-ups aren't necessary, but that confession will be a band-aid until them.

Overall, a beautiful song.

Does anyone know what the dialogue that comes in at the end is from? "I wondered why a man of your talent was on the dole."

Okay – Loveless Lyrics 13 years ago
Great song -- I love the broken-calliope aspect. It really compliments his voice. As for meaning, I would say the (male) singer is frustrated that his love interest (gender unknown) is keeping things with him platonic and he hears about said love interest fooling around with a girl, which just makes it worse.

In other words, the love interest sleeps with him but they don't have sex because he or she needs to sort out their head regarding their sexuality, and then after that frustrating night, he finds out that the love interest goes ahead and makes out w/ a girl right after.

Whole-heartedly agree w/ addiction. I see it as the artist being approached by a hot groupie offering drugs and him struggling not to relapse.

I'm not sure whether "fairest of fair" refers to the euphoria of the drugs or thinking of a girl who helped him get off of them.

I agree wholeheartedly with the relationship angle, but I think the pop culture talk indicates that the singer is a stereotypical Hollywood studio exec discussing his impending break-up in empty studio-speak.

Nearly all of the pop culture references are either movies or tv shows, and a lot of the terms ("what was I banking at the back end" "keep it on the down low") sound like generic studio-talk. So I basically see the singer as a studio exce who's every conversation and thought is couched in terms of how to sell his latest project, and he even talks about his deeply-personal break-up as if it's a write-up in Variety.

On the plus side, it also gives him perspective to objectively appreciate it: I take "the plot sucks but the killings are gorgeous" to mean "it sucks that this is happening to me, but from the outside, this would make a great scene."

I'm probably wrong about this, but when I hear this song, I don't think he just imagines being intimate with her. The tenor of the song comes from that fact that--while he is disgusted with himself over the meaningless encounter and cheating on his lover--he recognizes that this anonymous woman is blameless in his self-loathing.

The Main Drag – Jagged Gorgeous Winter Lyrics 17 years ago
I respectfully disagree with Orange Morendo--I don't think that anything it wrong. I think that they're looking at all features that are normally associated as negatives as winter as positives. The cold is an excuse to huddle together and the increased darkness just means that the nights they spend together last that much longer. I may be reading this wrong, but I think basically things are romantically heating up between them as it get colder, hence the irony of "try us with colder feelings" leading into hidden lusts.

Freezepop – Plastic Stars Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Check Checkk IT has it right, but I would also like to add that "When you're lying next to me" could have a double meaning. Obviously it means when we're lying in bed together, but it could also subtly refer to him being next to her and telling her lies about what he thinks. (Notice that no matter who is saying something it's "when you're lying next to me" and never "when I'm lying next to you"; I think that's because he's the only one who's being deceptive.

By and large, I agree w/ pisciculus, although the part about the rattlesnake and cactus reminds me of her other song So Nice So Smart, in that she loves someone enough to tell them to keep their distance from her so they don't get hurt.

I'd generally agree. I think it's reasonable to assume that the song is set the hungover morning after the singer was dumped and that the theme seems to be one of letting go and not trying to control or change things.

Snow Patrol – How to Be Dead Lyrics 20 years ago
I think a lot of the gender/speaker confusion stems from people misunderstanding the line about "my shoulders are heavy from the weight of us both." The song/argument takes place before the singer was famous and wealthy enough to should them both, meaning the girlfriend/boyfriend is supporting both of them. The singer is taking drugs, staying out late, and possibly fucking around as his significant other is working a regular job supporting the two of them as he works towards fame.

The girl/boyfriend just wants a yes or no answer about what he's been doing, not a fight, but the singer is getting worked up and defensive. He refuses to admit what he did or take responsibility, and his significant other is tired of being the bad guy/girl.

I have to take back what I said before. He obviously loves her with all his heart and feels betrayed by her. No one is so vehement about their indifference towards someone unless they truly care deeply. I think the singer loves her with all his heart, feels betrayed, and tries to hurt her by making her feel as insignificant as she makes him feel. Now ask yourself this: which is sadder--if she loves him and is destroyed by how hurtful his words of indifference are, or if everything he says is true, and she doesn't really care how much she hurt him, or how little he claims she means to him?

Natalie Merchant – My Skin Lyrics 20 years ago
I would say this describes a marriage or relationship that has lost its physical intimacy. The sexual passion has died. Her lover makes polite "face-saving" promises that it will get back on track, but she wants him to "remember the way you touched me before." The loss of physical love is why she feels "untouchable."

My Chemical Romance – I'm Not Okay (I Promise) Lyrics 20 years ago
Maybe it's just me, but I think this song is about how people tend to tell others that they're fine when they really aren't. I imagine most of the song to be the things he's screaming inside, that he'd like to shout to her, and the one section where he says he's okay is what he says aloud when she or anyone else asks him if he's alright, before he goes right back to screaming on the inside.

I don't get the feeling that the son of Hollywood was successful. I think he was either a child star or the son of celebrities that didn't go anywhere. Either way, the song is about people who get pigeion-holed into playing the role that is expected of them insteading of "playing you." The same goes for the prom queen who now wonders if she could have been something more if she hadn't just played the part of a beautiful barbie doll everyone expected her to be.

While I think elpierogigrande's interpretation is awesome, I think it is also literal. The failure who's childhood was based on expectations of being a star now makes his living on those Hollywood memories, making them pathetically inescapable.

Also, the character in the last verse also killed himself. "He never *seemed* depressed" be he still hung his clothes on the shower rod without getting undressed.

I like the use of the phrase "take a bow." It can represent death, as they chose, or it can mean the end of the role they were playing. They could simply take a curtain call on the role that was expected of them and leave the stage to play themselves.

I'm just blown away by how this song is almost a blueprint for how to destroy someone who loves you. He starts out as hurtful and degrading as he can, and just keeps reminding her how much they meant to each other while dismissing how worthless it all was. The worst thing is the sense you get that the girlfriend does still love him, but he's determined to destroy her rather than risk feeling vulnerable. I love how well this group just paints the walls with pure emotion, even when it's a hateful, aching emotion.

Simple Plan – My Alien Lyrics 21 years ago
Maybe I'm on crack, but I thought this song sounded like a "straight" guy dating another guy for the first time. Basically, he's in love with "her" even though "she" is physically different from anyone he's ever dated before (i.e. a guy) Hence not being your "typical girlfriend." Read my evidence and tell me if I'm wrong.

"Four legs to wrap around me" One extra leg would have easily meant penis, but that might have been too obvious. I admit this one may be a stretch, but the rest fir better.

"I'll meet you anywhere, somewhere no one can retrace. Someplace where nobody will know our faces." He doesn't want to be caught and outed.

"she can be sure with me, there is no conspiracy, she's not wasting her time." He's not just another jock out to get "her" for being gay.

"she can take me to a place that she calls home in a spaceship that will someday be my own" "she" will introduce him to gay life, and eventually he'll be comfortable with it without "her."

"I bought the astronaught's kit, now all I need's the rocket." He bought condoms and lube and I think the rocket speaks for itself.

Also, note that of all of the lovesongs on this album, this is the only one that ever uses female pronouns like "her" or "she". Every other song is in ithe second person, thus no gender is specified. Let me know what you think.

Barenaked Ladies – The Old Apartment Lyrics 21 years ago
I think you're missing the saddest part. I always thought he had broken up with the girl he lived there with. Instead, he still lives with her, but he doesn't love her any more. I think it's so tragic when he sings:

"She loves me, and her body keeps me warm."

He knows she still loves him as much as she used to--as much as he used to loved her--but now she's nothing more than a warm body in bed to him. That emotion just gradually died in him, and as much as he tries to act like nothing's wrong, he finds himself actually breaking into an apartment and obsessing over tiny things trying to regain some feeling. It's about the death of emotion.
