i seem to recall that this song was written by sting sometime shortly after his father passed away about their relationship. i think that lyrically, it's one of his best songs. probably up there with 'shape of my heart' in my book. he did a very moving version of this song on mtv's unplugged. i nearly cried. |

i think that patty just has the most amazing talent for telling stories through her songs. 'making pies' is heart-breaking because it tells the story of someone whose life has mostly passed her by. and yet, she is resilient; she survives; she makes pies. in the face of the absurdity of life, 'you could cry or die / or just make pies all day.' let's all make pies. |

i first heard this song as a cover by patty griffin who performs it live. i love her version but i think that tom waits' version is perfect. his voice and the piano fit together in this end-of-the-day love song. i've heard that tom and his wife wrote this song together. yes yes, what indeed can we take when we go except for the love that we have given, received, and shared in. |
