I think everyone is looking a little too deeply into the glove compartment reference. It's just a nice way to get to the point of the song... the sudden urge of misery that comes with the reminder of lost love. When you aren't mentally set for a second you're transported back to when you were with your partner and then comes the obvious realisation a second later that you aren't together anymore. |

Therefore Nick is wanting to get rid of a tie that is obviously very futile hence it would 'burn away right on cue'. "I might do that stuff if it didn't make me feel like shit I'm on some old reality tip so many trips in it " The two best lines in the song - he understands why people take hard drugs but he perfers to live a life based on some form of realness. |
