Taking Back Sunday – One-Eighty By Summer Lyrics 21 years ago
This song was written on a very personal level. This song is no doubt about a significant other and troubles with them. It seems as if the first half of the song is him almost begging her to accept him and that she loves him.

"Go on just say it
you need me like a bad habit
One that leaves you defenseless,
dependent, and alone"

This into is the beginning of him asking(almost begging) her to admit that she needs him.

"Go on just say it (are you afraid to)
you need me like a bad habit (say what you want to?)
(tell me you want to)
One that leaves you defenseless, (are you afraid to)
dependent, and alone (say what you want to?)
(tell me you want to)"

This just further emphasizes it.

"Well I hold (my tongue)
and use it to assess
the damage from way back when it mattered
Nothing seems important anymore, we're
just protecting ourselves from ourselves"

This is him saying he keeps quiet(although it doesn't matter anymore) while thinking about the significance communicating had back when the things he did/said actually affected her. He's saying nothing they do or say matters anymore because everything is just an argument.

"I'm making the difference
It just seems pointless
with the obvious lines all out of focus
Why can't you just be happy?"

Sounds like he is trying to change himself, but it doesn't matter now that she has forgotten him
or doesn't care to listen anymore. Him asking(begging again) for her to be happy and things to be normal.

"I don't think I'll ever come back down"

I don't know what this means.. I guess he will never be happy again? Or maybe he will never be
THIS low again.

"Go on just say it
Well I'll just say it
I'll just say it
I need you defenseless, dependent, and alone"

This is where the entire song turns around. Here you can tell that this whole time he has been
begging her to admit something that she is no longer feeling, but he is. He needs her to need him.

"She says, "Live up to your first impression"
Well my best side was your worst invention
Why can't you live without the attention?
Why can't you live without the attention?
She says, "Live up to your first impression"
Well my best side was your worst invention
Why can't you live without the attention?
Why can't you live without the attention?"

This whole outro is kinda of confusing, but I think it is basically saying that she is telling him he has changed from when she first met him and she wants the old him back. He is saying that the only reason he has changed is because of her.
