Just a thought, I've noticed a lot of similarities between Bloc Party and The Comsat Angels, and the Comsats had an album called "Waiting For A Miracle", and I think the "hoping for a miracle" line in this song is an allusion to the Comsats. Lovelovelove Mangula xxx |

I don't really like rap/hip-hop, but I thought this song was really really good, and I came here to find out what the references in the song were about. Can I say thanks to everyone who helped me on that count? On the other hand, I had to trawl through thousands of pointless posts criticising other people's grammar and spelling. Why was this the case? If the most important thing you can think of posting is an attack on someone's grammar, at least have the common decency to make sure your own grammar is acceptable. I happen to agree that some posts were illegible, but most were not, and so just miss out the posts you don't understand! Joe |

Why thank you dragonchaser :) Just because there are biblical references doesn't necessarily mean the song is about religion. I may be wrong, I never said my version was definitive, as there is only one definitive version, Gerard's. But that's how it seems to me. Oh, and a whole post just to say I am stupid? How mature. |

| Taking Back Sunday – Number Five with a Bullet Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Yeah, my guess is that the "lit" means smoking... that's all I can think of. I'm pretty sure this song is about sex, but I'm not sure that he's fed up, I think it could be that he just genuinely likes her, and doesn't want her to do anything she doesn't want to. | |
| Taking Back Sunday – Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team) Lyrics | 21 years ago |

Can I just point out something? Taking Back Sunday don't swear. Not in their lyrics, and, as far as I can tell, not live either. No idea why, but it seems to be true. Therefore, it's not an "f", it's an "s", for "sucker". Plus, it wouldn't make sense in context: "You're such a f***er for a sweet talker"... what would that mean???? Why do people feel the need to just write something as stupid as "TBS own" or "Emo sucks. And this isn't even emo". If you like the band, that's cool, I do too, if you don't, so what? Why bother reading their lyrics? Anyway, to my mind the entire song is fairly self-explanatory, apart from that one line "A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins". Obviously the "clever napkins" bit means something, because otherwise, it would be "paper napkins". I reckon it's symbolic, and actually, the "clever napkins" are just a way of saying disposable things. It's like saying, there are some amazingly clever lines that just disappear into nothing. I suspect the "clever" bit actually just means interesting, as in the napkins would make interesting reading. Joe |

To my mind, now Gerard has explained it, it's quite obvious what this song means: Sister, I'm not much a poet, but a criminal And you never had a chance Love it, or leave it, you can't understand A pretty face, but you do so carry on, and on, and on ::Look guys, I know I'm not the best lyricist, but at least I don't love the sound of my own voice I wouldn't front the scene if you paid me I'm just the way that the doctor made me, on, and on, and on, and on ::I'm not going to pretend I haven't had troubles in the past, I'm not going to pretend to be perfect Love is the red of the rose on your coffin door What's life like, bleeding on the floor, the floor, the floor ::This first line is sarcastic, joking about the stupid imagery used in a lot of music nowadays, and the second is a continuation of the first, lots of emo talks about bleeding on the floor, and he's taking the mickey out of that You'll never make me leave I wear this on my sleeve Give me a reason to believe ::You're not going to get me to go away, I'm going to carry on playing the music that means a lot to me, tell me why I shouldn't [Chorus] So give me all you poison And give me all your pills And give me all your hopeless hearts And make me ill ::All of your talk about death and dying is a whole load of rubbish and makes me feel sick, actually think about what you're writing You're running after something That you'll never kill If this is what you want Then fire at will ::If you really want to play music, then go for it, at the moment, you're talking rubbish, your words mean nothing Dish all you want but who's gonna save me? I keep a gun on the bunk you gave me, hallelujah, lock and load Black is the kiss, the touch of the serpeant sun Beneath the mark of the scar that makes you run, and run, and run, and run ::More mockery of meaningless lyrics that are supposed to sound deep, etc. In short, this song is a mockery of all the emo songs that drop in references to death and religion because they sound deep, not because they actually mean anything. |
