| Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Brain Gallop Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
trying to analyze Malkmus lyrics is a futile effort, because I feel like they're really just how the words/phrases sound together rather than what they're supposed to say. that said, the first two lines seem pretty politically charged, especially considering that this song follows "Senator." that said, I love the shit out of this song. |

| Modest Mouse – Workin' on Leavin' the Livin' Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| i agree with the sarcasm in the repeated lines, but i mean c'mon. the title is fairly indicative of the song's content. one time i had the worst day imaginable (family death, got fired, found out i couldn't afford school anymore) and decided to celebrate by downing a bottle of whiskey, and half a bottle of gin. funny enough this song was playing. takes on a whole different level when you're dry heaving on the carpet. | |
| Jawbreaker – Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I'm pretty sure the title's in reference to the entire music scene in the Bay Area Jawbreaker was a part of around then. In interviews around the release of Dear You, there's a lot of backlash on part of Schwarzenbach because they were basically shunned and loathed when they signed to DGC. So I guess what he's doing with the title is attacking the entire scene through means of detailing a typical party there? Or it's just one of those cases where the title has absolutely nothing to do with the song itself. |

| Jawbreaker – Ache Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"Everything's empty and meaningless, and nothing ever really gets better from here." Only Schwarzenbach makes it sound good. The first time I listened to this album, I sat in an empty playground in the middle of June and just listened to this song on repeat. Cathartic shit, this music. |

| Jawbreaker – Basilica Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Just some fun background information. I guess Blake posted a list of descriptions of the songs on Dear You upon its re-release: "Basilica - It felt like the end, the end-all. It's kind of an extension of Lurker, a rum conclusion. I was spending a lot of time at Mission Dolores, either attending services or just sitting quietly in the pews. I would put on a black suit and walk down there, like an undertaker. I had a lot of heavy shit going on, a lot of worry. The verses come from that church meditation – especially the small graveyard in the back of the Mission. It's such a lovely, sunlit place. Birds, brilliant San Francisco sky, figures at rest. Basilica was fun to record because we used these different amps. We tracked the guitars on this really surreal night. We turned out all the lights; it was ghostly. The instrumental portion adds a lot to the song. When we do it live, it's great to open it up, make it loose and smear things around. When it works live it feels like purging; it becomes really physical in the end. I just used my upper arm and beat the shit out of my guitar. It's pretty satisfying – definitely the rock instinct. A total power trip." |

perfect. i agree wholeheartedly with the above poster. if i were sappier, this would be my theme song. |

| Why? – Simeon's Dilemma Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
seriously. the lines "are you a female young messiah for stowaways in dugouts and are you what church folk mean by the good news pulling plastic bags off heads" has made it tempting to put on a mix for a girl quite a few times. but in the end, that would just be creepy. so yeah. |

| Jawbreaker – Boxcar Lyrics | 16 years ago |

yeah, my last comment was from three years ago. I got upset about some pretty stupid shit. I don't care who covers whatever anymore, it's music. And enjoifreedumb, um, I think that blake just really liked kerouac at the time (see: condition oakland). |

| Why? – Simeon's Dilemma Lyrics | 16 years ago |

shadester: either being a dick on purpose or just a jackass. or are you giving me a dirty look in the rear view clicking the button on your u-haul pen don't pretend you didn't see me coming round the bend on my fixie with the chopped horns turned in trailing behind your biodiesel benz stalker's my whole style and if i get caught i'll deny deny deny Um. OK, so do you mean to say that this is a serial killer situation? Because I could kind of grasp that looking at the lyrics this way. Unfortunately for your case, this: "twenty five carved with a butter knife on the palm of my new hand it's out you're mostly what i think about" Doesn't make any sense. And I don't think it's hard to imagine that Yoni likes to write depressing songs: "Unfold an origami death mask and cut my DNA with rubber traits Pull apart the double helix like a wish-bone Always be working on a suicide note" The only other interpretation I can think of for that is that he's just being sarcastic/ironic. Which is fucking stupid. So yeah. |

| Jawbreaker – Basilica Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
by bicyclewhoa on 03-07-2006 @ 05:49:25 PM by the way - pretty much all of "dear you" is about blake... he's the you in dear you I don't think it's as much about Blake as it is directed towards a certain entity. I've always pictured most of the songs on the album (Jet Black, Basilica, Sluttering) as a personal address towards one or two people in particular. |

| Jawbreaker – Peel It The Fuck Down Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I always thought that this song tied in with their other song Sleep, which was made around the same time. He seeks escape in sleep, which only reminds him of his existence in reality. Maybe referring as to his mother as a stranger means that they are growing distant, and this fear is being made prevalent through his dream. I can buy the part about being helpless. In 1992, Blake had throat surgery to remove polyps, and novacaine is commonly used to numb the face and throat. When I had my wisdom teeth out, the doctor said that my face would feel extremely wide because of the numbness. Blake might be describing that with the line "Why is my face so wide? Cheek to cheek is almost chin to eye". So, during recovery, Blake felt helpless and angry, and sleep offered no solace. I'm probably reading way too much into this, and it's probably really about losing a mix tape he really liked or something. The only thing I've never figured out is the title. Maybe a reference to the Velvet Underground's Peel Slowly and See? |

| Ween – There's A Pig Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It's about hiding from the cops because he hasn't payed a fine. Reminds me of Johnny Cash. | |
| Jawbreaker – Friends Back East Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Nothing played out the way he wanted it, and he feels like he wasted his entire life, especially when his friends ask him what he's been doing recently. He wants to do something to change his situation, but his actions keep getting in the way of any positive change he can make. | |
| Jawbreaker – Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| On a live version of this song, Blake says "They hated this song at Spin Magazine, so you know it can't be that bad." | |
| Angry Samoans – They Saved Hitler's Cock Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I wish more pop punk bands were like this; I love these guys. | |
| Ween – I Can't Put My Finger On It Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I always considered this an autobiographical song describing the band Ween itself. Since they jump around genres so much, there is no real way to classify them. The live version is amazing, every version I've heard. |
|
| Dwarves – Lets Fuck Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
They're just fun to listen to. I have a CD with pretty much all their albums on it (seeing as how most of the songs are 1:00 long), and it's great to jog to. I don't think you're supposed to take a band who wrote a song called "Insect Whore" seriously. |

by greeni on 01-05-2005 @ 11:33:16 AM awsome song but 'douglas' sung this song better than anyone! and has anyone noticed that green days new song shes a rebal has exactly the same riff. And yet, my friend said Jawbreaker ripped off Dookie when they made Dear You. I love this song. It embodies my perspective on punk, and it also mentions one of my all time favorite authors. I hate the Ataris, because now when I Boxcar's lyrics on a folder or in my info or whatever, someone always goes "Oh, I didn't know you liked the Ataris!" People who like the pop-punk/emo of today's music should at least acknowledge Jawbreaker's existence, seeing as how they practically sculpted that sound. |

| Jets to Brazil – Sea Anemone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
by Cathineal on 09-07-2002 @ 09:18:06 PM I actually made a picture of the "Turtle on its back in the desert sea, and you look like a cool drink slightly out of reach", same with the "starfish with its arms out in a daze, staring at the stars through an ocean haze" I love the visualization on this song. I drew a picture of the hotel room he describes in the song, actually. Everything clicks with this song, the driving drum rythm, Blake's guitar and vox, and the bass. The bass gets to points where it's shockingly poignant, especially when it lingers after he finishes the verse "Now I'm making out the shapes". My favorite off of Orange Rhyming Dictionary. |

| Ween – God In My Bed Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Great song. Maybe it's about having a terrible day and coming home to an overly needy person? This is actually a Z-Rock Hawaii song. Z-Rock Hawaii was a collaboration between Ween and members from the Boredoms, a Japanese noise rock band, during Ween's big music excersion in 96. The album itself is freaking impossible to find; last time it was on amazon it was selling for $50, and the website that used to sell it closed down. |

| Ween – Beacon Light Lyrics | 19 years ago |

"So strap on that jammy pack," An allusion to the Pod? This song is amazing live. I bought the X-Files sound track just to have this one; the Soul Coughing song on it isn't too bad either. |

| Defiance, Ohio – Tanks! Tanks! Tanks! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
