There is a great deal of Christian imagery in this song and I think that is the subject.
He is competing with religion to win the heart of a girl. |

contemplate the mystery not in the traditional sense, but in the religous sense like the mystery cults such as Gnosticism, Mithraism and Early Christianity. She could be describing his barriers to emotional closeness as a rite that she cannot pass. |

| Bright Eyes – Oh, You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place Lyrics

Im really not sure why this song cannot just be interpreted as an ode to an ancestor that he never had the chance to meet. The first verse might be seeing an old dust covered picture of the person with his parent (the 'common friend'). He asks questions from family members and is fascinated by he or she. I guess the biggest giveaway would just be the 'we share a name' phrase, which implies family and that he has seen his or her grave. Frankly this is much more meaningful and beautiful than another romance song, they are a dime a dozen. |

| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Baudelaire Lyrics

Ok, this song isnt a call to be wild and crazy and intrepid I dont think you could be more wrong, because you obviously have no knowledge of old Charles Baudelaire. He was the prototypical dandy, experimenting with all the drugs he could find, and what did it get him? He died a broke poor man crying in his mother's arms. I'd say there is just the tiniest bit of sarcasm in this song. This song is more of a statement of solidarity with the boring one. However, I'm too sure that you are busy attempting to hide your boredom to think about that. Oh yeah, and dont say Rock on Conrad because IT ISNT EVEN CONRAD SINGING! |
