| Elbow – Scattered Black And Whites Lyrics | 21 years ago |

I love this song, it's absolutely beautiful. I'm not sure it's about a child visiting his grandfather, so much as Guy Garvey revisiting his childhood memories. "And my sister buzzes through the room Leaving perfume in the air And that's what triggered this" - smell is regarded as the sense most associated with triggering memories. Later in life he smells the same pefrume smell, which sets him off thinking of times past. So he sits looking through "scattered black and whites" (photos) and remembering the security & simplicity of his childhood & family life. His memories are the place where he shelters from time to time. |

No, Wombles are a particular type of anti-globalisation protester. They get their name from the home-made body armour they wear, which makes them look kind of bulky, a bit like the characters from the classic childrens' tv show The Wombles. Top notch song! |

For the people asking "Does the Helter Skelter still exist? Where is it? Can I ride it?" - a helter skelter is not a specific slide, but any tall, spiral shaped slide. These can be found in many childrens' playgrounds in the UK. Great song too :) |
