| I love DR as much as the next guy, but if you wanna hear the best fucking album ever created, check out the album 'the aeroplane over the sea' by Neutral Milk Hotel. written about the holocaust. genius. will make you want to laugh, cry, celebrate, die, wow... will make damien's music seem incredibly superficial (i know, hard to believe) just do it. | |

I would speculate that this song is about a first love, being young, naive. The chances of a first love being right for you- forever- Hell, the chance that you'll even end up liking them is almost nonexistent. They end up sucking, yet- for some strange reason- you know that you will never feel the same way about anyone else, no matter how perfect they seem. I admire Damien Rice for reaching into the past and stripping away his jaded, adult perceptions of life (as celebrated in the film) and responding to those pure, innocent, seemingly unrelated thoughts and ideals that, no doubt, everyone begins with in youth. |

my thoughts as I listen: wings in your spine- god, not God, but god, divinity. I feel this underlying dialogue in lots of mangum's songs about reincarnation. As I listen, I feel like we are all connected to others. maybe anne frank, maybe pepito arriola (little boy in spain, playing piano with flames). Maybe we (Mangum) are these people. are we reunited with these people? When? Where? (God as place, divine spectacle) or ARE we simply these these people? This song to me is a plea to some divine universal power for resolution. understanding. Sorry but I, like Mangum, are fond of streaming thought and I, too, feel disconnected from those that came before as a result of these crazy times. God is a place |

the meaning of this song, to me, is encapsulated in "And when her spirit left her body How it split the sun I know that she will live forever All goes on and on" Mangum is exploring/questioning the value of a human life, maybe specifically that of anne frank. Her soul splits the sun-- yet no one notices-> keeps on truckin' |

the 'little boy in spain, playing pianos filled with flames' is Pepito Arriola. Not alot is known about the life of the musical prodigy. It is suggested that his his history has been obscured or "covered up" for reasons relating to the alleged murder of his female cousin by his aunt. He is often cited as proof of reincarnation: "At the International Congress of Psychology in Paris, 1900, Professor Charles Richet presented a Spanish child three and a half years old, named Pepito Arriola, who improvised upon the piano rich and varied airs. At the age of four and a half years he played six compositions of his own at the Royal Palace of Madrid before the King and Queen. His harmony was remarkable and his expression marvelous. The young artist has since become and incomparable violinist. The law of rebirth alone can explain many of these cases; their gifts are the results of immense labors which have familiarized their spirits with the arts and sciences." Also: "To tell the truth, there is in him a narcotic, it is neither the touch, neither the harmony, nor the agility, but the expression. It has a richness of astonishing expression. That it is about a sad or merry piece, or martial, or energetic, the expression is seizing . Often even this expression is so strong, so tragic, in certain airs melancholic persons or funeral, which one has the feeling that Pepito cannot, with his imperfect touch, to express all the musical ideas which quiver in him: so that I would almost dare to say that he is a much larger musician than he does not appear to be it ..." Sound familiar? |
