i would like to agree with gregg, being a christian and all, but it seems that in this song and also in 'Questioned Apocalypse', Spatch is exploring their negative thoughts on christianity. The picture put forth in this song depicts a boy who fell into christianity and was taken down and drowned by it(hence "its a silent steeple that carries us down" its silent because God is silent and does not seem to respond or benefit him and its carrying him down--drowning him). At the same time others flew past him and enjoyed life. The sea, being christianity or God himself "wouldnt so much as reply"..this could mean he dove into christianity and it did nothing for him except hold him back while others were living their lives (also referring to the "silent" thing). "We were going with the wind in our hair and we didnt want to look back cuz if we did we would not care" suggests that others who didnt make the mistake of going into the ocean were enjoying living their lives without Christianity bogging them down..The "sail on, take it back" seems to be the boy saying "sail on" dont stop and make the mistake i made ...because he wants to "take it back"...I might agree with gregg if it wasnt for "Questioned Apocalypse" in which Spatch definitely explores their doubts about christianity and their temptation to "change their minds" |

Definitely was 'sold' not 'so'..great song except who knows what their mission really is.. we just know they arent gonna stray from it or sell out. The only indication of what it is is when they say "on a mission to be so well"..it's possible they are just referring to their music and that they will not become like anybody else..or possibly their mission is somethin deeper..we will never know. |

Its possible the whole song is about a dream or vision the guy had one night when he was questioning the purpose of his life..the woman may just be a manifestation of that thing in his mind makin him question himself..and the old man is definitely his inner wisdom and desire just to be laid back and content..it seems after the "woman" had aroused this question in his mind..he goes through this journey in his head to find what his life should really be like.. and he finally comes to the conclusion from the old man that he was fine all along..not to worry so much, hence the "ease your mind, have a banana or two" (my favorite line)...the man(his inner wisdom) tells him all he needs is the essentials (the lime..etc) and to be laid back..the whole journey was for nothing and his life was like that to begin with and that is why, in the end, he advises the listener that if "that woman come to see you with her song so sweet, say "Damn let the poor sucker sleep...let him sleep"" |

| Dispatch – Two Coins Lyrics

im so glad silverpuppiez finally commented because nobody realized the obvious meaning of the two coins..in ancient time the greeks started this tradition of putting a coin on each eye of a dead person for the 'boatman' who took them to the afterlife. So when he says "i stick loneliness, your lips and the two coins of your eyes, into my pocket...", he is taking all he remembers of this woman who either literally died or she 'died' as is she is no longer in his life and stores his memories away to give him comfort when he is down (when he reaches into his pocket for some small change-the two coins)...If you want an easy way 2 find out bout the coin thing just watch Troy or Boondock Saints. |
