Beck – It's All In Your Mind Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree, it's a beautiful song. The entire Sea Change album is epic, but this would be my favourite from it.

I'm not real sure on the meaning. My guess would be he's referring to an ex-girlfriend who he would have liked to have maintained a friendship with, but as time passed he discovered she just wasn't worth it. He realises that she's changed, for the worse: "well I cannot believe you got a devil up your sleeve'' and "you're all scared and stiff, a sick stolen gift''. That's my interpretation anyway.

Stunning song though.

Augie March – There Is No Such Place Lyrics 21 years ago
Pure beauty. Think Nick Drake meets Badly Drawn Boy meets Nick Cave (lyrically). This is a majestic piano driven song by a totally under-exposed group. A song to close your eyes to when you are by yourself and just want to reflect. Song for a lifetime.

The Von Bondies – Mairead Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is dirty, raw, delicious blues at its best. Easily my fav song off the record. This is a throwback to the 60s-70s psychedelic era. Howling, menacing guitars. Plenty of soul in the vocals. A+.

Broken Social Scene – Lover's Spit Lyrics 21 years ago
The realisation that this is a song about homosexuality has totally dampened it for me. Previously I had loved this song, and it still has beauty. But the lyrical content and meaning has alienated me. As a straight man I can't appreciate what it's supposed to be about. I can't think about my girlfriend when it plays because I know it's about homosexuality - it's a road block to my heart.

The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics 21 years ago
Poignant, sad, emotionally over-bearing, disturbingly honest. That's a massive thumbs up, then.

Ben Harper – Amen Omen Lyrics 21 years ago
Cannot believe only two people have commented on this song. One of the most genuinely soulful performances you will hear by a modern artist. If you don't believe me go to 3 mins 43 secs and close your eyes until the end. But don't do that, because the song is a work of art and the emotional build-up throughout is incredible.

Obviously it's a break-up song, but you don't have to go through a break-up to feel it.

I don't like all of Harper's work, but this is raw, unbridled stuff. A song for a lifetime.

Sufjan Stevens – The Transfiguration Lyrics 21 years ago
I absolutely love this song. It's spiritual, but who cares? The harmonies in the last two and a half minutes are just majestic. Close your eyes and you will feel something inside you light up. A song to love for a lifetime (and then some).

Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics 21 years ago
Definitely a relationships song. Looking for a drugs connection is an easy option but in this case I think it's wrong to do so.

This has easily been my favourite song the past six months. Every time I play it, I shut down everything around me and become absorbed in it's beauty. It's a song I know I will still love 60 years from now. I can't wait to introduce my own children to Elliott Smith one day.

Jon Brion – Strings That Tie To You Lyrics 21 years ago
Lovely song and another fine but all too rare example of Brion's abilities as a singer-songwriiter-composer.

The Eternal Sunshine soundtrack is frustrating. I don't think I've heard 59 seconds of more beautiful music than Brion's "Row", but why is it so short? If it was three or four minutes, it would be epic, but at 59 seconds, he's selling listeners short. None of the album's instrumentals go for an acceptable length as far as I'm concerned. If someone knows of extended versions of these songs, let me know please.
