This is personally my favorite track off of Damnation. It lulls me into a quietude that's something like despair, but the feeling is electric every time. I don't know if a song like this can have one concrete interpretation. The lyrics themselves don't seem to matter as much as the sound of the voice against the music. |

I'm not sure if this song is about suicide in response to having one's heart broken or something like that. I think it is simply a song about contemplating the meaningfulness (or meaninglessness) of life, which, of course, often leads to thoughts of suicide. The line "I try to forget you as you forgot me" isn't about someone else; it refers back to the first line, to "this life I'm leading". He is saying that he is trying to forget his life just as he feels his life forgot him, and that there will be nothing left for it to take from him because he is going to take his life. I suppose it just feels more potent to me when interpreted like that, and Opeth has always struck me as dealing in very potent messages and imagery. |
