| Bruce Springsteen – Youngstown Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| The factory workers story. Tells the story of the rust belt- the former industrial heart of America, now a shadow of what once was, the steel industry losing to up and coming industrial giants like China. A beautiful, sad song, probably one of my all time favorites. | |
| Neil Young – Southern Man Lyrics | 21 years ago |

The civil war was over states rights, and that included slavery. Saying the civil war wasn't about slavery is about as ignorant as saying the civil war was only about slavery. Of course, I'm not from the south, and I think a certain historical bias exists in terms of what students are taught. I also find confederate flags to be tasteless in general, but people will be people I suppose. This song mentions the good book which is an interesting point since slavery was often justified using religion. I enjoy the song, it's quite powerful and inflammatory, and look- it even sparked a debate! |

| Tori Amos – Space Dog Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I'd agree with the drug trip idea, because the one obvious line in this song is "so sure we were on something". But, like any good Tori song, many interpretations work. | |
| Phish – Theme From The Bottom Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This song always reminds me of marijuana. Let me explain: On the way upwards, the colors come back But all along the bottom is blue, grey, and black The darkness is cold and perception goes wrong And the night seems to go on incredibly long Those lines in particular^ The colors and perception changing, and time going on longer than it seems. Also, the "anything that you'd like to try" line always reminds me of somebody offering someone else drugs. One could certainly argue against my feeble attempts at interpretation, because none of the other lyrics make sense with my analysis. Regardless, this is an awesome song, possibly my favorite Phish song. |

| Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This song will forever remind me of angsty middle school days. I'm not putting it down or anything, but to me, this is the archetpyal teenage angst and anger song. I listened to this song back then, and I loved it even though most of the lyrics were a mystery to me. Later on I think people get beyond this song, either into other bands, other Nirvana songs, or both, but this is probably most kid's first teenage anthem. At least it was like that for me. | |
