Bass pedal squeaks are not a true fault in my book. What a great song, by the greatest rock band of all time (your mileage may vary, of course!) |

Yes, that is probably the worst Jimmy note on any Zep song, and I suspect you're right they ran out of takes. Of course it was left off the album they were working on at the time, and held over for Physical Graffiti, so maybe Jimmy just said Eff It, if it has a blemish so be it! |

Stolen it was...then taken to another place. Not to excuse borrowing without credit by any means (and Zep has had to pay settlements and judgements to more than one party and/or their estates for such cavalier practices), it's still an amazing recording by a group that had a lot of amazing records. |

It's about that gal in NY harbor, the one with the torch, figuratively. The damned shame is we've swung back to where those questions can and are asked again. |

Great tune. A blues shuffle with a "jazzy-pop" turnaround, and Walter Becker plays one of the best guitar solos in the Steely Dan catalog (according to him in an interview, on Denny Dias's Fender Tele). The darned shame is these guys hate the sound of this whole album (Katy Lied) as they had HUGE problems with the then-brand new DBX noise reduction system they were using....me? I think they sound pretty good even 30+ years later. |

This song very much reminds me of CSN&Y's "Ohio". Any time the powers-that-be decide to use armed combat trained soldiers for crowd control, incidents like these two tragedies are far too likely to happen. The vast majority of the onus goes not on the protesters or the soldiers, but on the silly, idiotic sort of politicos who think a hammer is the best tool to fix a broken window. |

Yes, this is one of those songs that just hits home at a personal level; Written about a decade before puberty hit me and I had even inkling of the feeling he's talking about, and probably danged near two decades before the I felt the same BITE he's getting at. But I guess "love lost" songs work in any era, human nature being what it is. |

I just don't see where a word synonymous with prostitution could or would fit into this song, especially at the end of the main verse line. Yet another example of the "if it aint' drugs, it must be babes" school of song meaning interpretation. |

Great song, but Jimmy's slide line, in one place, has the sourest note on any Zepp studio release. I'm guessing that was the most perfect take he could get. |

Great production, great instrumentation, and great vocal harmonies; and still catchy fourty years later. When I think "great pop songs" this is always on my short list of favorites. |

| Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl Lyrics

Produced by Burt Berns
from AMG:Bert Berns was one of the great rock and soul songwriters of the 1960s, as well as being a producer of note. He worked in the studio with the Drifters, Ben E. King, the Isley Brothers, and Solomon Burke. He wrote or co-wrote a raft of classics, including "Twist and Shout," the Drifters' "I Don't Want to Go On Without You," Burke's "Cry to Me" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," Garnet Mimms' "Cry Baby" and "It Was Easier to Hurt Her," and "Hang on Sloopy." By the mid-'60s, he was proving adaptable to changing trends in white rock too, successfully collaborating with Lulu, Them, and Neil Diamond. With executives of Atlantic Records, he founded the Bang! label, which had hits with the McCoys, the Strangeloves, Diamond, and Van Morrison before Berns' death at the end of 1967. |

As to Morrison's genius, I won't argue; most of it's just not to my tastes. But the genius certainly shines (to me) the most through his popular work. True, it's just a simple pop/rock love song; but the lyrics; the phrasing; the beautiful lead/rythym guitar (and instumentation in general...who produced this?). One of the all time greatest pop-crossover-classic rock tunes IMO. |

Wow, I've watched the let it be motion picture, and I think Mr. Lennon could tie his shoes just fine. Just more villification of Yoko by may here. Look, these guys were growing apart; if anything, John's behavior with her was a symptom, not a root cause of their struggles. I'm sure Paul doesn't see it that way, maybe not even today, but he was too close to be objective. |

Oh jeez Yoko this and that; IMHO she had little to do with the internal struggles of the band; that's not to say she didn't influence John, but these guys were growing apart anyway. Villify her if you must, but she's only a small part of the dynamics that produced some of the Beatles best music. |

This might well be George's greatest writing effort. There's also no doubt in my mind that that's EC on the solo (tone, phrasing etc., George could spread out stylistically but that woman tone is definitive EC to me [not that I had any real doubts anyway lol]) |

A song about one of the most tragic domestic events of the Vietnam era.
I recall reading somewhere (the liner notes of Decade, perhaps?) that Neil later felt somewhat guilty for cashing in with a hit song about the bloody business. |

I think most of you hit the nail right on the head about this song's themes, but I think the music is quite amazing in it's own right. The acoustic guitar, mandolin, and steel guitar give this song an amazing feel. It's always been one of those songs that "takes me someplace else". |
