| Toadies – Velvet Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| I came here to confirm that he was actually saying "fuck" and "cunt". Who hasn't felt this way at one point or another? This song is fucking awesome. | |
| Toadies – What We Have We Steal Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| Two people takeng advantage of one another's vulnerability and an affair / extramarital sex ensues. Essentially they are stealing from the other's partner. | |
| Toadies – Sweetness Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| Whoa, sex, huh. I see this entire album using sex and death both literally and metaphorically. A person's dark thoughts and deeds projected onto the object of their affection. Or, in simpler terms, a partner who is toxic to the relationship in a pretty effed up way. Cutting into someone's sweetness could be a psychological act just as much as it could be a physical one, maybe even both at the same time. | |
| Toadies – You'll Come Down Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| I believe this is an extremely well written analogy about about a woman mixed up with a man who brings her down. It's written from the man's POV and seems to imply it was his plan all along. | |
| Phish – Weigh Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| I had recently been contemplating the meaning of this song within the context of the break up theme and came up with this thought. The song could be about avoidance by asking completely unrelated questions. Maybe he doesn't care about the state of the relationship, or is oblivious about the situation in the same way he casually sleeps diagonal when his partner isn't there. For at least one person, a break up begins in a whirlwind of doubt. "I'd like to know my options, so I can weigh them. What do you say?" | |
| Elliott Smith – Don't Go Down Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
It's weird hearing E.S. say "baby" in a song, right? Smith has said himself that the themes presented in his songs are, moreover, a vehicle to a bigger discussion about dependancy. The woman in this song is the subject of several individuals' co-dependence, between the author and her parents. She dreamt it might (symbolically) kill her one day, and there is no way to know who did it. All she knows is that she has to get out. A message from the sun could be to simply burn. Kinda depends on how you want to view it. |

| Whoa! I just came here after hearing that very recording! https://archive.org/details/esmith1999-04-13.flac | |
| Rasputina – When I Count Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| This is one of the best ring tones you'll ever have. There's no doubt it's your phone going off, and everyone else thinks its creepy as hell. | |
| Muse – Starlight Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Wow I have to say this is one of the most compelling interpretations I've read so far. | |
| Muse – Starlight Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I always had it in my head that the ship that was taking him far away was DEATH and that this would be a fantastic song to play at a funeral, dedicated to a spouse or children. It is beautiful and sad, but I didn't think of it from the POV of depression until I had read the other comments here, which were rather eye opening. But here's my meaning: your bittersweet life has been fulfilled, and it's a message from beyond to loved ones that they will always be remembered, regardless of where you have gone. | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Quiet Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| To me this song is about the quiet denial of guilt. You take things that make you sleep, to avoid the inner conflict, grief and hopeless that consumes you in the dreadful silence of it all. | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Soma Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I think it's to say that tin is thin, it's easy to dent and poke holes in. It was a flimsy promise. | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – In My Head Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I tend to believe most songs by Queens are about about the one that got away, not so much drugs. Someone with whom you ebb and flow but only collide occasionally. Thoughts of of this person are tucked away in your head, because all you really have, is that one song. | |
| Panic! at the Disco – Miss Jackson Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Totally!!! The chorus sounds like a direct reference to the song Nasty if you're familiar with the original Miss Jackson. Stroke of genius if you ask me. | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – The Vampyre Of Time And Memory Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| While the song was written in a different frame of mind, it is exactly how I felt after my sister killed herself. Suicide is the vampyre of time and memory. | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – Kalopsia Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Check out live performances of this song on Youtube you'll see that Josh dedicates this song to his daughter almost every time. I totally get it, life is sometimes shitty, friends turn away, but you have this darling little thing who sees you more perfectly then you see yourself... bye by black balloon... see you real soon ... she's the one with kalopsia. The one who love you no matter what, and reminds you that they can all f* themselves sideways... you got each other's backs. | |
| Franz Ferdinand – Outsiders Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I have a totally different impression of this songs meaning, quite simpler actually. It's not about a break up, the lyrics state at least twice that this person is still 'here' and still of importance after some period of time. not to mention the songs opening: "We're still outsiders" and the music is kind of sexy for a mopey break up song. It's about growing in a relationship; growing together, growing older, growing perhaps a little to comfortable with one another. You learn about a person, discover their dark side, worry a bit if it will last until finally your so comfortable you eventually "stop dreaming of that person". Perhaps they were the type that never fit in, which is what attracted them in the first place, yet one (or both) still feels like an outsider, even in this long standing relationship. Now what she's squeezing in his fingers well.. yeah. I love double entendre's. Maybe's it's his hand, maybe it's his unit, oh wait.. his heart? Hell could be his ID for all we can say but I like that I can insert whatever meaning I want into that slot. |

| Rasputina – Signs of the Zodiac Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Nah, I can't get behind any of these meanings. From the first time I heard this song knew it was a poke at astrology and/or people who believe in something that has no scientific basis, and on the hope that something will work by faith. "I know what you need, this will really work." "In ancient times if you were sick, they make you bleed" "Honey, I know it hurts." But know, it is for your own good. We know better. "Think of the love and attention we all have shown." Radical Recital she opens the song with a jab about the zodiac signs of the people in the audience, she's making fun of Astrology and the people that want to force it down your throat because they think they know better. Ever met those types? I have. Melora has a strong cynical side, it's reared it's head in many a Raspy song. |

| Rasputina – Stumpside Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I seem to think it's about poor or peasant like people that hold onto strange and outdated superstitions in the hope that things will get better or that they might receive gifts or blessings later in life. The allegories expressed in the song suggest witchcraft IMO: we come alone and leave alone and we look the horse in mouth/we scratch the skin and break the bone and see bird migrating south as well as telling stories by stumpside. Wishes and superstition that keep a person going with their hard and mundane life while the meaning and the outcome sometimes escapes them. The music also has a haunting sadness that seems to accent this possiblity. |

| The White Stripes – Hypnotize Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Johnny Rivers did Secret Agent Man. I never drew that parallel before, but who cares, it's still a damn good song. | |
| The White Stripes – Ball and Biscuit Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| thanks ltfred for that tip on Willie Dixon. Just like the name of the album "I am the blues" he really is... I listened to several tracks of his that were covered by the likes of Led Zeppellin and The Doors, but have heard these elements in many many other 'bluesy' songs that have come out since. I also have many friends that say these songs are ripped-off from somewhere, but I can't say I mind, because it works. Whether the material is original or not something is working for this guy. Now with all this talk of sex, I think I'm goling to listen to this song with my eyes closed.... maybe the whole album for that matter.... | |
| The White Stripes – In the Cold, Cold Night Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Dusty Springfield seems to be going out on a limb, Meg's voice is nowhere near that powerful. Perhaps Meg's singing is to emphasize the 'young girl longing for an adult romance' element of the song. | |
| The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I also have a different view on a line in the song: "I"m gonna work this job" simple, yes, but makes just as much sense as anything else. I love this CD, has anyone heard their first album, a lot of riffs have been recycled perhaps Jack felt he could do better? My friends however seem to think all of his material is ripped-off from other classic rock and AOR bands in a way that is hard to pick apart, you couldn't say exactly what songs he's ripping off. I don't know if I agree, but I wonder if anyone else had that same thought. |

| The White Stripes – Fell In Love With A Girl Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Don't feel sorry for her, I think she's getting just as much exposure. Keep the spotlight on Jack he's Smokin' Hot. | |
| The Cure – Lullaby Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I just read the spider and the fly and it would seem that they could be related, although, I do lean more toward the idea that this is a song about molestation and abuse. The second verse says it all in my opinion, and pretty much line for line. The video is pretty creepy but is a literal translation of the lyrics without anymore insight as to the meaning of the song, although, I tend to think that it illustrates the abuse theory even more. | |
