| The Magnetic Fields – Born on a Train Lyrics

This song took on new meaning for me three days ago. That day a girl I work with at a mental health facility spent free time with me, teaching her to play this song on guitar. She hadn't heard the song, just knew it was my favorite song. I taught her the chords and we were going to move on to learning the actual song the next day. The next morning when I was getting ready for work I got the call--she had killed herself that night, late after I had gone home. She left me in my sleep. I keep listening to this song, knowing that nobody's going to hurt her anymore and nobody's gonna make her want to die. I'm playing it at her memorial next week. |

She doesn't like it that way, Dev. He's not just the strong, silent type. He is silent and closed-off but she knows he suffers in silence and she wants to stop his suffering. She wishes strongly that he would let her in, but, lacking that, is offering what she can to help. This song is so fucking romantic and still realistic. It's beautiful. |

This strikes me as a song about a boy who traveled to NYC to see if there was something between him and Julia. She didn't feel the same way he did.
My girl from NYC is Patti and the same thing happened to me. |

| Wolf Parade – You Are A Runner And I Am My Father's Son Lyrics

I read through the comments and didn't see anything about how runners wear numbers. I think the first stanza is about the writer trying to be a runner but not being able to get very far. Thoughts I had about this is that he isn't as much like his father as he thinks he is, or maybe he is trying not to be like his father. |

I interpret this as someone becoming more and more withdrawn. He isn't sharing his feelings anymore (gave up crying, except seemingly when alone) and he's losing his friends because of it. |

| The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me Lyrics

Wow, it's been almost 2 years since I posted on this song.
I like what all of these have said; the topic of the vodka bottle is an amazing interpretation.
That being said, I interpret the talk of ecstasy differently--he's asking the subject to rekindle the romance, not take drugs. He recalls the ecstasy they used to have in their relationship, and says it in a way suggesting that he's talking about drug use which is sort of tongue-in-cheek. |

Stephin said he asked Shirley Simms to sing this because he always sounds like love has wrapped around his heart like a boa constrictor and she doesn't. |

| Five Iron Frenzy – Where Zero Meets 15 Lyrics

This song refers to Colfax and Broadway, an intersection in Denver, CO, where the 0 bus (Broadway) meets the 15 bus (Colfax). It's a very sketchy part of town, even though it's right near the capitol. Actually, most of both streets are sketchy, and Colfax especially is notorious for prostitution, drugs, gang warfare, and homelessness.
I just finished a year working with the homeless in Denver and really identify with the lines:
"How can I ever save the world, on cup-o-soup and student loans? I want to try and save the world, but it never goes that way. God I don’t know what to do, down at Colfax and Broadway."
My job there paid very poorly, as do most service jobs staffed by idealistic young people who are trying to save the world. And after an amount of time it really does seem like it "never goes that way." |

I think it's a commentary about the government--all the politicians are liars and cheaters, setting a poor example for everyone else. So, "I'm gonna lie, I'm gonna cheat. I'm gonna follow their lead..." |
