I really like this song because in many ways, it encapsulates my feelings about the United States. i'm a foreign college student and deeply love this country, even though i dont plan on living here. its an amazing place and i've met some outstanding people here. that said, i am critical of aspects of American culture, politics and foreign policy. this song speaks to many of those feelings. in the current "you're with us or you're with the terrorists" era, this song is even more poignant for me because it shows that people's attitudes are much more complex than that. i dispise terrorism as much as anyone else but ultimately you can love something and still be very aware of its flaws.
societal improvement and progess are the products of critical thought. Like other societies in the world, America is constantly working towards improvement. this implies imperfection and there's nothing wrong with someone writing a song about those imperfections. you have to be aware of them to correct them. |

i agree with the Katrina theory in the windowsill line. its a great song and i think the structure and constantly rising tempo works well against the theme of increasing unrest and pressure in contemporary American society. |
