| Modest Mouse – Interstate 8 Lyrics

the meaning of this song is so obvious its ridiculous, the song is called interstate 8, and he actually says "im on a road shaped like a figure 8, im goin nowhere but im guaranteed to be late." its about being stuck in a rut, being in a part of your life and you dont have the will or initiative to move on, but you know you need to move on, because youve completely exhausted this particular option, whatever that option may be. |

have any of you seen mm live before? does isaac strike you as the kinda guy who gives a flying fuck about the environment? the song is full of action, think about what all of the actions have in common and teeth like god's shoeshine has more to do with the fact that materialism does not equal happiness, even though society says that it does. |

ok did you actually read my post? are you familiar with the phrase "tongue-in-cheek"? do you know what the critics were saying about modest mouse when they first signed on epic? obviously the song is meant to be taken with a grain of salt, isaac is being sarcastic. when mm first signed with epic all the critics were talkin about how they sold out, so on their first major label release, tm&a, they had something to prove. tiny cities is meant to be IRONIC, because tm&a is easily mm's best album. now, keeping in mind that the lyrics are supposed to be ironic (theres that word again) go back and read my first post. |

"Well all that icing and all that cake I can't make it to your wedding but I'm sure I'll be at your wake" to respond about isaac and weddings, i think this is a reference to a one night stand, or at least meaningless sex. all that icing and all that cake is another way of saying that he gave into his urges. he wont marry her but he'll still be there the morning after. hope that helps. |

its about timing, the cake at breakfast, cash on the sinking raft, fun during sleep, flowers during allergies. its all about something good, in this case i think its a female, that comes along at a bad time. isaac may have met a great girl but at an inopportune time in his life. you can bitch about me saying its about love, but i calls it like i sees it. and by the way, love and hate go hand in hand. love->broken heart->hate. |

| Modest Mouse – Exit Does Not Exist Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
"Does not Exist, Take an Exit I hear voices insinuating
Feeds me lyrics to this song that I am saying" i think isaac is thinking about a relationship he wants to put out of his mind, but cant.
"Sunlight 7:20 PM, early September Standing looking at a photograph That you do not remember being taken" this chick may have dumped him, and has moved on, so much so that she doesnt even remember him.
"You look out of breath, and me like I am faking
As a matter of fact I don't recall this photo being taken
You don't even actually exist so I just started shaking
Does not exist, take an exit" so he's lookin at this pic of himself and this chick and just decides, if you forgot about me i will forget about you, but an exit does not exist, he cant escape his thoughts. |

| Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics

i thought the third planet theme could also be a metaphor for a child. "Baby cum angels fly around you reminding you we used to be three and not just two. " this seems like maybe his girl had a miscarriage or abortion. "A 3rd had just been made and we were swimming in the water didn't know then was it a son was it a daughter. " so i would say that the real world application in isaacs life was maybe that he got a girl pregnant, and the baby died, hence the insights on the lifecycle. "Well, the universe is shaped exactly like the earth if you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were." i think this is a metaphor for the path you take in life, if you never deviate from your initial path you will make the same decisions repeatedly, and are doomed/blessed to repeat yourself. i know in my own life i feel like ive come full circle many times, and found myself in the same situation i had been in a few years earlier. |

exactly. "i sold my atlas by the freight stairs" i dont know about you guys, but this makes me think of what it would be like to do coke in a way. as a result of the social stigma placed on coke (and rightfully so in my opinion) and the fact that coke turns people crazy with addicition (ive seen it happen) in a way its almost like you are selling your soul or atlas when do that shit, the term 'coke whore' comes to mind. "we write our maps in the stalls" i think its not a little known fact that the bathroom stall is a good place to..."write your maps" if ya know what i mean. |

| Modest Mouse – The Good Times Are Killing Me Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
|
when someone does acid their eyes are opened to a new perception of reality. not unlike turning on a light, when you come down from the stuff its not like the light turns off, its always gonna be on. drugs are kinda like school, they can teach you alot but you can only go to school/do drugs for so long, at some point you need to move on. with that said, isaac has apparently reached that point in his life, he is 'graduating', its not like he will lose all the insight he gained. the change in sound on good news is more likely as a result of their record label and choice of producer this time around, and not because isaac is trying to quit using drugs. oh yeah, dont try to talk about things that you dont have personal experience with because you end up sounding like a dumbass! |

its pretty obvious that this song about modest mouse selling out. the moon & antarctica is their first major label release. from their perspective hell has frozen over, they were signed by a major label. drinking coca-cola, or in other words they are doing endorsements. shake hands with the masses or they are gonna get radio play and become accessible to the masses. so what do famous rock stars do in their spare time? they hit the spa of course! |

| Modest Mouse – Life Like Weeds Lyrics
|
|
i wanna start out by saying this song is f*cking incredible, and when he says "i could have told you all that i loved you" it almost breaks my heart, cause i can think of so many times when ive wanted to say those three little words and didnt! "And in the places you go, you'll see the place where you're from" i think this basically says that we draw parallels between what we are experiencing now with our past experiences. "And in the faces you meet, you'll see the place where you'll die" like someone said earlier this is a reference to the circular nature of things, the way life tends to come full circle and you seem to find yourself in the same situation you may have been in before, and i think the question is, will you make the same mistakes twice? "And on the day that you die, you'll see the people you’d met...And in the faces you see, you'll see just who you've been" when you die, your whole life will flash before your eyes, and you will see the people you interacted with in life. since you will now have a third person perspective on your life you will truly be able to see what kind of person you were, good or bad. You should have told them you loved them. i think beatjunkie08 pretty much sumed up the "life like weeds" metaphor. "And you think you feel most everything And we know that our hearts are just made out of strings To be pulled, strings to be pulled So you think you've figured out everything But we know that our minds are just made out of strings To be pulled, strings to be pulled" i dont think isaac is trying to say that there is no meaning in anything, but i think he is trying to say that we believe what we want to believe. we attach our own meaning to life, but at the same time dont waste all your time trying to figure out the mysteries of life. because they are just that mysteries, who's answers lie beyond the realm of human comprehension. someone once said (cant remember who) "answers only lead to more questions" so dont waste your time! go out and live your life to the fullest!! |

| Modest Mouse – Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice on Ice, Alright Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
|
just like all mouse songs this song has multiple meanings. it starts out in one place, with the whole mafia styrofoam boots part. so isaac is apparently murdered by the mafia and then goes to heaven. while in heaven he meets jesus, and jesus tells him that God isnt what people thought he is. Isaac's God is the creator and nothing more. He set the world in motion, and now its up to each individual to do their part, there is no divine intervention. So Isaac is basically a deist. At this point it seems to me that the previous events of Isaac's mafia murder and visit to heaven may have just been a hallucination as a result of crystal meth or ice for those of you in the know. when one does meth they tend not to sleep for many days, and as result lose touch with the cycle of day and night. what happens when you dont sleep for a few days? you hallucinate! |

| Modest Mouse – I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock) Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
|
alright here is my interpretation, i think each individual line has its own meaning and these meanings are pretty easy to understand, but i think there is also a general theme to this song. the song is basically about isaac (or anyone for that matter) coming to terms with himself and his own mortality. i came as a rat or in other words i came as something other than myself. the song is about self discovery and learning to accept who/what you are. hope this helps. |
