Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 16 years ago
to me, this song is talking about young love. about how everywhere we look in the media, in books, in movies, in tv shows, in music, everyone is emphasizing that teenage love, that high school sweetheart, so that's what everyone is looking for. they immortalize it by creating a statue so that everyone can see that ideal that they're striving for, and they feel hopeful and happy.
"They made a statue of us
and put it on a mountaintop
Now tourists come and stare at us
Blow bubbles with their gum, take photographs of fun
have fun"

the problem is that while everyone wants young love, whenever people see a young couple in love, most assume it won't last, or they're just in it for the sex or something of that sort. people judge the couple, tell them that they shouldn't exist, that they'll fall apart. generally these people are older and life's hardships has taught them that true love doesn't exist and will never exist, that all of life is suffering and always will be. they say "when you're older you'll understand." when they don't even understand themselves.
"then they'll give us a talking to
cause they've got years of experience"

these people will want to take away that love because they don't understand why that couple found it when those jaded older people did not.
"we're living in a den of theives."

i think "rummaging for answers in the pages" is referencing that media influence, because we all look at books and magazines and see this immortal image of young love and want it, want it more than almost anything.

i also think the whole "its contagious" part is just how every time many people read those books or see those movies, they want that romance. that wanting is contagious.

i don't know. i mostly interpret songs based on my life. when i hear this song, this is what i think of. Regina Spektor almost definitely wrote it about something entirely different.
but if you think about it...thats what music is for, right?

Death Cab for Cutie – My Mirror Speaks Lyrics 16 years ago
i'm noticing that this song seems to have some subtle references to other songs.

"It sees the frightened child in the body of a full-grown man" that one reminds me of Brothers on a Hotel Bed

"no longer easy on the eyes, but these wrinkles masterfully disguise, the youthful boy below. who turned your way and saw, something he was not looking for, both a beginning and an end. but now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident."

and "With an eroding beach disappearing from under me" could correspond to Transatlanticism, "I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere when the water filled every hole"

those are the most obvious two. it could be me just making connections, but they seem too obviously placed to be accidents

Voxtrot – Firecracker Lyrics 17 years ago
to me this song has a lot of parallels to Ayn Rand's writing, particularly Atlas Shrugged.

"Im still in love
I set the love in motion
I'm still in love with the future we planned
Tell me you feel, this aint complete emotion
Im still in love with you baby I am
Oh, did you turn your back on me?
Or did I turn myself against myself?"

I feel like this is an internal dialogue that Francisco d'Anconia is having with himself whenever he thinks of Dagny. He's still in love with her and wants to be with her, but he can't because he had greater responsibilities to Galt. "I'm still in love with the future we planned." i think that is him saying that he remembers all those years ago when they were talking about how they would each reach the top of their business (francisco-the top of d'Anconia Copper, Dagny-the top of Taggart Transcontinental), and he still feels the same. the "did you turn your back on me" lyric is saying that he misses her a lot and wishes he could still be with her, and then he said "or did i turn myself against myself," which is him debating whether or not he's doing the right thing with the way he's acting.

"Kick the wall smash the lights, rip the shades, burn it all
Firecracker
Firecracker
I will not complain at all
I will never be tricked by you."
i think the wrecking of that metaphorical room is a symbol of what Francisco, John Galt, and Ragnar Danneskjold are doing to the world of the looters and second-handers. by taking away all the industrial power, they are destroying it. Also, they refuse to complain, because that admits defeat and shows that they are powerless against the people trying to destroy them, and they know they have all the power, so they won't complain, and they are smart enough to never be tricked by society as others are.

Nightmare Of You – In The Bathroom Is Where I Want You Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitly agree with everyone who said this song was about being gay.
"what will it take to get you up?"
obviously talking about male anatomy.

"I'm not that kind of man, but I'll make an exception for you."
again, sort of obvious how you can apply this to being gay.

my favorite:
"I'm a professional in feigning love."
he's been pretending to be in love with women for so long that he's deemed himself a "professional". He doesn't want to break the mold and come out as gay, he finds it easier to be in the closet and have affairs like this one. Maybe he's got a strong religious background that tells him he shouldn't feel what he's feeling, or maybe his family would throw him out for being gay.

but yeah, thats what i got out of it when i listened to the lyrics closely.

oh, and of course, the part about "we know no law at all."
i really do think its law. i suppose it could be love, but i don't hear a V anywhere in there.
and yes, the law is against same-sex couples, which is ridiculous, but true.
but between those two graffitied walls, the law doesn't have to exist.

again. thats what i got out of it.

Murder by Death – Shiola Lyrics 17 years ago
i think that this song is about a man who kills his family because they want so much from him ("They take and take, but never get their fill") and he just can't take all the pressure, so he goes crazy ("the love and anger coiled into one") and kills them. "I Live Alone, More or Less" makes it sound like he buried them somewhere around the house, so he feels that they're still there, and he's asking their ghosts for forgiveness. And i agree, i think he kills himself at the end (good catch, hell_mongoose. i never payed too much attention to that)

Motion City Soundtrack – When You're Around Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song is Justin talking to himself. I think the "you" is in reference to how he acts when drunk, because he has a problem with alcohol. He's saying he hates how he acts when he drinks, he has affairs (midwest love affairs, i bend when i am bored) and in the morning he has to come to terms with what he did. The "vicious remarks and verbal attacks" are things that he regrets saying when he was drunk. and "you don't fucking listen" means that he can't fight his drunk alter-ego, because he won't listen to his common sense when he's drunk.

that would explain why the "you're" is in quotations, and so are all the "we"s and everything.

Architecture in Helsinki – The Owls Go Lyrics 18 years ago
to me, this song always seemed like it was written about throwing away things that were important to you.
love notes, old photographs, things like that.
"finding a replacement with a heart sedated, I'll forget you."
to me, that line is saying that even though these things you're throwing away are bringing up sad memories, you're going to move on to something better and forget whatever it was that you were throwing out. You'll find a replacement for them.

haha or maybe thats just me twisting the words. all i know is that after me and my boyfriend broke up awhile back, this song seemed to be telling me that even though it hurt at the time, i was going to get over him and move on, and i couldn't keep protecting the memories, i had to let them go.

Architecture in Helsinki – Souvenirs Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is just about how you can't go back in time, all you've got is your memories, and you're constantly wondering if you got it right.

"I’ve got souvenirs but yesterday can’t
mean too much, have we missed an opportunity."

souvenirs being memories.
yesterday can't mean to much because otherwise you'd just be constantly stuck in the past.

idk. thats the vibe that I got from it.
definitly a brilliant song though.

My opinion is that these lyrics were written about Pete Wentz's attempted suicide while they were writing this album. If you look closely, it makes sense.

"I'm having another episode
I just need a stronger dose"

My Chemical Romance – You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, am I the only one who thinks that this song is about Gay prison rape? Its kind of obvious, with lines such as "to your room
what they ask of you" (Implying that whoever is raping him is telling him what to do and if he doesn't do it, they hurt him) and "take it like a man" so yeah. But if Gerard really did write it about Bert and himself...mmm, sexay! LETS HAVE A 3-SOME! okay, spaz out. i'm done
