They were definitely not religious. If anything, they seem to be far more fond of satan. Of course they have been very deep in their other songs, but they weren't intentionally deep in this one...it just turnd out that way. Other songs have direct references to lotr(battle of evermore?) but not this one. I would go with what plant said on the song remains the same dvd which was "I think this is a song of hope." To me, the "two paths" represent the path you're on, and the path you would like to be on...

While it is overplayed, it's best to hear live versions of it. I'm not so sure that the band worshipped the devil... I think they wrote it and got the meaning out of it later...since there could be so many meanings to it. Personally, I think it comments on how people should act on their desires.
