| OK Go – It's Tough To Have A Crush When The Boy Doesn't Feel The Same Way You Do Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Not to put down the band in any way but I do think they are gay, or at least "metrosexual" I get this impression from their songs, especially this one which I think is from the perspective of a boy. This is backed up by their live performances, which I have seen many of. What clinched the gay thing for me was when a met Damian back in early 2001 when they were still pretty new. I talked to him for a bit about his band and then he told me he'd love me forever if I bought his demo and gave me a really strange wink. I know it was nothing but it just set my gaydar off. Not to mention the fact that their songs make an appearance on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy soundtrack. But this is nothing against the band in fact more power to them their music is great! | |
| Radiohead – Myxomatosis. (Judge, Jury, & Executioner.) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I see a very strong yet esoteric connection between myxomatosis and mind control. It has to do with the history of British colonization and man’s hubris in his effort to control nature. The standard domesticated rabbit was introduced by to Australia by an English colonist in 1759 for sport hunting. Because of the lack of predators (such as feral cats) the rabbit population increased rapidly, becoming an environmental disaster. The rabbits destroyed the fragile ecosystems of Australia cause a large scale decline in native plants and animals and making farming very difficult. In the 1950s scientists released Myxomatosis which originated in South America in an effort to end the rabbit troubles for ever. To me this can be correlated to the often flawed efforts at controlling the general population (proles if you will) by the powers that be. The proles are easily associated with rabbits, with their seemingly mindless and meaningless existence and reproduction. The people in power (party members to use another Orwell-ism) see the proles as rabbits that need to be controlled. And the existence of the proles is a direct result of the class systems perpetuated by the party members, similar to how the existence of the rabbits in Australia is a result of British colonization. So the party members are engaged in an ongoing struggle to contain and control what they have created by any and all means necessary. The powers that be inject us with their agenda of control through the media and corporate generated pop culture. The control of rabbits using a disease introduced artificially relates to the control of the people through the introduction of false information and hidden corporate agendas. There is a great paper on the subject of Myxomatosis and pest control by a guy named Josh Burrill at http://www.burrill.demon.co.uk/meddoc/myxo.html |

| The Weakerthans – Leash Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| To me this is the quintessential Weakerthans song. It has that kind of depressed yet optimistic feeling that captivates me so much. This is not the kind of brain dead and meaningless teenage “angst” gushing out of top 10 bands like linkin park. It is the kind of feeling that comes from an intellectual contemplation of the meaning of life. The Weakerthans aren’t pandering to pimple faced 14 yearolds who are want to piss off their parents, their speaking to twenty-something intellectuals and contemplative types who are stuck in a rut in small town America (or Canada). | |
| Queens of the Stone Age – Go With The Flow Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This song is definitely about breakups but more specifically the challenges to our personal identify that breakups can present. Its about how in a relationship we sacrifice our identity for the good of the relationship. The “you like what she likes so she’ll like you” kind of thing. After the end of the relationship he realizes that both him and her were being fake and their entire “thing” was meaningless. The girl says “I’ll throw myself away, their just photos after all” meaning that her personal identity is represented only by the preserved memories of the “good times” in the photos. And the singer responds by saying that “outside the frame is what we’re leaving out” meaning that the relationship was based purely on these false memories represented in the photos, the real personal identities of each partner were left out of the “photos” for the good of the relationship. Throughout the song the singer contemplates “going with the flow” or giving in to the desire to continue the relationship by keeping up his charade. But he feels remorse about not being true to himself asking but “do you believe it in your head?” In his heart he “wants something good to die for, to make it beautiful to live.” Meaning that he is longing for the mythical “soul mate” who loves him for who he really is and not what he pretends to be. He is torn between the long term search for this soul mate and the instant gratification that he gets through these meaningless relationships. “Its so safe to play along” means that the easier route is to continue the charade and find more of “something sweet to throw away,” or short-term, meaningless sexual relationships than it is to find a true soul mate. In the end the singer is torn between his desire for instant gratification and his deep longing for true love. So yes, the song is about both breakups and sex. But maybe I’m just overanalyzing things. Anyway the drum work in this song is amazing and that’s all that really matters right? |
