The Lawrence Arms – The Disaster March Lyrics 17 years ago
"i am man with guitar, i am three's company
it's the end of the world, sit and watch with me."

Really?

I kinda prefer the other lyrics. Which re: movie reference is likely to be the end scene in Fight Club. Although watching three's company is as close to the end of the world as you can get. And is consistent with the TV show/movie/pop culture references in the other songs on the album as metaphors for stupidity.

The Catcher in the Rye thing is in here too - inability to clean graffiti off the subway walls symbolic of inability to 'fix' the world etc. (just refer High School English notes). 'Bitter when I fall' - Caulfield's fear of his big dramatic 'fall'. Torn between over dramatising his own self pity, but then the moment he decides he's being overly dramatic is the moment he runs the risk of going too far the other way and losing all emotion/values entirely. Kind of like emo in a way....

Third Eye Blind – Narcolepsy Lyrics 17 years ago
What Pasketanki said. In fact, that was so eerily similiar to evrything I've experienced I found myself wondering in a fight club kind of way whether I'd actually written it! 4:01 am as well.

I have narcolepsy and as strange as it may seem to people who don't have it - this song is not a metaphor, it actually describes almost exactly the sleep paralysis, hypnogogic hallucinations components of narcolepsy. They get these throughout the day when they start to nod off. But can also see how easy the lyrics would be to confuse with drug use.

It focuses actually a lot on the crazy, vivid and "real" dreams you get during the 15-20 minute daytime naps, and the uselessness of trying to fight them. Also the term "dream" is misleading because they feel more like waking hallucinations, whilst being paralysed.

I too read Dostoevsky, Lermantov etc. but what else is there to do at 4 in the morning when the rest of the world is in a deep sleep.

Hot Water Music – At the End of a Gun Lyrics 18 years ago
I just heard this before. Haven't stopped playing it for 3 days :-)

Noone on their death bed looks back on their life with regrets about their career. Its not even relevant. If they have any regrets, it is for failed relationships. This is what the song is about.

The Jam – Smithers-Jones Lyrics 18 years ago
Its less about working class being exploited, and more about middle class joe cubicle being dumped on following a "career" and its empty promises. Happy ending though, ole Smithers kicks back and realises he's now free. A lot of the Jam stuff was quite pro the working class (Saturday's kids etc.).
As apt today as it ever was.

The Lawrence Arms – Chapter Thirteen: The Hero Appears Lyrics 21 years ago
hehe. I read master and margarita by mikael bulgakov just because of this song. Despite that I still couldn't make sense of it. Or the book for that matter :-(
