According to this: https://blog.sugarman.org/2012/08/11/the-amazing-story-of-hate-street-dialogue/ It was written by Gary Harvey, Mike Theodore (producer) and Dennis Coffey (guitarist). The original title was "Haight Street Dialogue", referring to the hippie community in Haight/Ashbury. "pigs and hoes" might actually be / have been "pigs and hoses", referring to the frequent harassment by the police ("pigs") using pieces of garden hose for beatings. Which, according to Harvey, triggered the change of the title. However, "hoes" fits the rest of the song at least as well. The lyrics don't match the ideas of a hippy community, however: without the reference to Haights it could be the description of any tough, rundown inner city area: the dirt, the drug dealers ("pushers"), the young girls, thir children playing inbetween. The central feeling of the song is one of two-sided alienation: once by the the frequent police harassment, equally well by the drug culture, the shattered family structures (birthed by the city, raised by dealers, cousins work as dealers) and the futility of finding love inbstead of another trick. Black Mesa is another research lab from the half life universe (the one in HalfLife). In Portal, you see some powerpoints indicating Aperture Science (the research lab Portal takes place in) and Black Mesa are competitors for government research grants. In Half Life, the world has been taken over by aliens ("The Combine") - which would explain GLaDOS remarks about not going outside, and give you a FAT CHANCE Black mesa helping you. OTOH it might just be "Black Mesa will use you as I used you." |

IMO it's not a metaphor for life. It is the "carrot on a stick" to make humans do what you need them to do. "So delcious and moist"... so, where's the test chamber? Like sugar for lab rats, it embodies how GLaDOS - an AI for scientific research - views humans. From that, we can work along some ideas."The cake is a lie" - maybe GLaDOS figured out you just need to promise cake, without actually delivering it. It might as well represent the reveal to the test subjects that it's not just "fun science" - you run some neat tests, and then get cake - but the goals are entirely different and you, indeed are merely a lab rat. Another idea: When GLaDOS ran out of cake she had to find new ways to "motivate" test subjects, leading up in the nerotoxin release mentioned in the game. |

It was the first song I heard of Placebo (saw the video actually), and was hooked, even though I was torn between the angst feelings I remember well, and the "I'm an asshole and say it, cool huh?" attitude. So the idea of someone remembering the angst but having outgrown it's "inescapability" appeals to me. heideroosje: schizophrenia is not split personality (google is your friend :) ) Anyway - it makes a lot of sense, but he's old enough to know more pleasure besides sex. |

exactly quartz. I, too, see the grief of losing a loved one to an accident (not necessary lover, might as well be a child) There are several things that make me connect to this song: how people deal with death (I almost hear someone saying: "face it, she is dead"), how everything you see in this world relates to such a loss, and you have to turn away from the things that don't fit. "If I look hard enough into the settin' sun / My love will laugh with me before the mornin' comes " being he most developable lines: the hope to be together in a way. Dying? Losing Sanity? Or just going to the place one used to be together, doing what we did together... |
