i think comparing this song to Hurt shows the natural progress Reznor has made over the years... from very individual themes to broader problems of society. the following is NOT my interpretation of the song as a whole, these are just some thoughts triggered by listening to it. if you're not interested in that, don't read: --it makes me think about how humankind really has not changed at all over the course of it's existence, in more ways than one. if horrors and pain cease to be a part of our everyday lives (as in welfare states), people start craving it... finding new ways to bring it in, whether by artifical entertainment or really shooting at random people on the streets, at schools. (And you never get away) --we are taught how to make money, how to write an essay, but noone can teach us how to live. and people get lost, leading lives that do not fulfill, or just unable to make the best of it (And should have...? And were going to...?), because they think there are more important things at hand (eg being 'succesful'; chasing after a pre-set model that is unreachable, cannot suit all people). there is too much pressure to be super-succesful at all costs, living a moderate, balanced life (which is what most people end up doing) is not valued. yes, we are but little screws in the grand scheme of things, but coming to terms with that fact and accepting your role for what it is - miniscule, but still necessary - is what... should be the goal. telling people they're just a sheep in a flock of million and therefore useless will not help a thing, it is a product of individualism that will birth more desire to be special and lead to inner conflict. it does not matter if our lives are ultimately a sprinkle of dust in the scale of an universe (sorry for the lame metaphor), for us, our lives are the only thing we really have. living it the best you can is the only true value. i love the piano in this. |
