i see this being about two very emotionally unstable people. he feels that he is so unstable by himself, that he doesn't need any more baggage like this abusive, fucked up girl. the only catch is that he seriously obsesses and lusts over this girl, and is dependant on her, and as unhealthy as it is, he can't imagine living without her. it's about being in love with someone's imperfections, their "crooked teeth", as much as you wish you had fallen for someone who could take care of you and improve your life. |

as many others have said. i see this song as billy knowing that he has to change, to adapt. but fearing that if he makes these necessary changes, he will be leaving someone he loves behind. and that if he makes these changes, and leaves his innocence and childhood behind, there will be things that he will never be able to get back. once he has made the change, it will be painful for him not to return to life how it once was.
