I always thought it was about her getting ready to go out. The verses she sings to her hairstylists and everyone else helping make her pretty, and then she sings the chorus to herself. Heh, I dunno, makes sense to me =X |

Y'all pretty much have it down, except I would argue that it isn't the alcohol talking to him, but rather, his addiction/alcoholism. It sounds the same, but there's a major difference, especially if you're a fellow addict like Elliott was. Also, I would say that, though taken literally it's obvious it's about alcohol, it's about his heroin addiction. It's pretty well known that he was a H junkie, so... Either way, it's a simply gorgeous song...and to anybody that has an addiction, it's especially powerful. A love song written from the point of view of the addiction, towards the owner of the addiction...absolutely genius. |

I can see where you would be frustrated that people are just now finding out about Zero 7 because of Garden State...it's like people finding out about Bad Religion for the first time because they opened for Blink 182. However, I think it is of importance to see how it fits in with the movie. Everybody tends to relate songs to their own life, even if that's not exactly what the song is about. I am no exception, and I happen to be a recovering drug addict; so take the following with as much weight as you please. But, I think it fits in with Garden State absolutely perfectly. When I heard that song, I saw myself in the past...using drugs all the time, not going anywhere, just waiting for something, ANYthing to happen to me. I am the motionless wheel...nothing around me is real, from my "friends" (aka drug buddies) to the manufactured happiness I'm feeling. Everybody is saying different things to me, and like how that line is presented, it's all very confusing and not much of it carries any weight with me. My friends are babbling about things I could care less about in their drug induced states...my parents keep calling me and telling me to do something with my life...my psychyatrist (sp?) keeps telling me that I need to change...etc, etc, etc. But, that's just what it means to me. I don't think that finding out what the artist intended the song to mean is as important as clarifying what it means to you personally...thus, why this site is so interesting to me. ^_^ |
